Wits is always tough – Katsande

“Our focus is on the Wits game,” stresses Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande ahead of the Bidvest Wits clash on Wednesday evening. “We forget the past and we also don’t look too far ahead. Our next match is at Bidvest Stadium.” This Absa Premiership encounter kicks off at 7:30pm.

Wits have been doing well this season and they are in third position on the league log, ten points behind log leaders Chiefs. The Clever Boys have scored 14 goals in their 12 league matches so far, while conceding ten times. The Amakhosi, meanwhile, have netted 16 times, while having conceded five goals.

“A game against Wits is always tough,” continues Katsande. “Besides that, they play at home. On the other hand, we want to gain maximum points. We just have to implement the coach’s game plan.”

Last season, the Amakhosi’s away game against the Clever Boys resulted in a goalless draw. Chiefs have created numerous chances in their last official matches, but this didn’t result in too many goals.

“The positive thing is that in the past we often lost after struggling to put the ball in the net,” reacts the Zimbabwean midfielder. “Now, at least, we still pick up points. However, I don’t want to dwell too much on the past. You learn from it and you move on.”

“However, I do want to stress the importance of our supporters keeping faith. They mustn’t boo one of our own players when he misses a chance. Supporters must be real supporters, motivating us. That’s so crucial, especially for a player who has just missed a goal scoring opportunity.”

Katsande has been a rock in Amakhosi’s midfield, regularly snatching the ball from an opponent’s feet. Against Wits, he will probably do battle with Sibusiso Vilikazi: “Sure, he poses a threat and as a team we will have to cooperate to be able to neutralise him. Meanwhile, I am happy with my own progress. If you want to succeed, you need to be willing to learn every day. In my position consistency is crucial. However, no player wins a game on his own. We win and lose as a team.”
