The new tournament which was launched amid much fan fare in Johannesburg earlier this week, will now be known as the Telkom Knockout Cup. It is not just in name that there has been a major shift, as the new sponsors have also upped the ante by offering the winners of the new tournament an overall prize purse of R4,250, 000.
All eyes will be at the Johannesburg Stadium on the 28th October when the clever boys host The Amakhosi, as the rest of the PSL team will only kick off their quest to take home the large prize purse on offer after Chiefs have played Wits.
For Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp, playing the game at the Johannesburg Stadium is a prospect he is looking forward to. The Chiefs coach said “We played a league game against Swallows there last season and the stadium was full and even though there is a running track around the pitch, the atmosphere inside the stadium is still electric”.
Chiefs will be looking to overturn their recent hoodoo in cup matches against The Clever boys when they meet towards the end of the month as The Amakhosi have lost in their last two outings in Cup games against Wits. Those being at the quarterfinal stage of the 2003 – 2004 SAA Supa8 competition as Wits ran out 2-1 winners, thereafter the round of 32 in the 2005 ABSA Cup as Wits defeated Chiefs 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the teams were goalless after extra time.
The Amakhosi’s last victory over Wits in a cup game came nine years ago, as they defeated the clever boys by an aggregate score of 2-1 in a Rothmans Cup Quarter Final game.
