Coach Ernst Middendorp appeared focused after watching his side complete their pre-match training session in Nelspruit on Friday afternoon. “What break?”, said the Mentor brushing aside the thought of the festive season break. “We treated this festive period like any other normal FIFA week break. I think all the teams did the same. So, we were not on a break per se.”
Kaizer Chiefs is in Mbombela to play their first match of the 2020 calendar year against SuperSport United. “We are playing against an ambitious side in United,” adds Middendorp. “They play with purpose and we have to be on top of our game to overcome them. They are coming from a defeat (losing to Chippa United), which against us won’t mean anything. Their players will want to cause an upset.
“We are ready. If you recall from the last match (1-1 draw against Maritzburg United), we had a healthy 30-minutes where we played according to plan. Carrying the ball forward and catching the opposition on the backfoot. We gave away the lead in that game. Going forward, we must play with our intensity and take the opponents on. We have worked on several areas during the week and ready for this evening’s game.”
In his parting shot, Middendorp remains optimistic, saying: “All in all, we are continuing with the process of what we began with at the start of the season,”
Kick-off between Matsatsantsa and Amakhosi is at 18:00.
