Wuest who in the past has played for Cape Town based clubs Cape Town Spurs, Mother City and most recently Santos is overjoyed at having been offered a contract by Chiefs. Ryan commented “I am really happy that I have been given this opportunity obviously signing for the biggest team in the country is a big bonus”. The young keeper is aware that he will have a fight on his hands for a place in the starting eleven, with Rowen Fernandez in fine form and Emile Baron on the mend he will have his work cut out for him. “I did think a lot about the fact that Chiefs have two great goalkeepers already on their books and I felt that it will be good for me to sponge off them for a while. I am confident that after a few months with Chiefs I will be able to stake a real claim for regular game time,” added an upbeat Ryan Wuest.
Amakhosi goalkeeper coach Rainer Dinkelacker who has been working with Wuest for the past month was confident that Ryan could grow into a world-class keeper in the mould of either Emile Baron or Rowen Fernandez. Rainer said of Wuest joining his team of keepers “like every player Ryan has his strengths and weaknesses, I do feel his weakness can be worked upon, physically he is very strong - he has a good height and has the potential to seriously challenge Rowen and Emile”.
Ryan will be aiming to impress Ernst Middendorp in the pre-season campaign as Chiefs head off to Bloemfontein this weekend to participate in the four- team Mangaung tournament. With Rowen Fernandez having already turned out for Chiefs on five occasions in the past month, it is very likely that the Chiefs coach will look towards once again rotating his team around on Sunday and Ryan could well be a beneficiary of the coaches pre-season rotation policy.
