Mathebula was starting his third consecutive game of the season for Chiefs on Sunday, up until the point where he had to be substituted from the game. He, along with his midfield companion Siphiwe Tshabalala, were pulling the strings for The Amakhosi as they on a number of occasions mesmerized and tormented the opposition.
The pair almost combined to find an opening for Chiefs in the second half when Tshabalala chipped a ball over the SuperSport defense which Mathebula managed to lob past Onyango, the SuperSport keeper. Kaizer Motaung Junior was unable to turn Mathebula’s effort at goal and instead knocked the ball into the side netting.
Midfielder in pain
Chiefs twenty four year old midfielder, who hails from the Limpopo Province, will need to under go an x-ray on his injured ankle on Tuesday, as the swelling on the ankle had not subsided and he was still in a lot of pain on Monday. In addition, the quick and nimble-footed midfielder was having difficulty walking and needed to be helped on and off the team bus after Sunday’s game.
Amakhosi physiotherapist David Milner, while explaining Mathebula’s injury told kaizerchiefs.com on Monday: “The report I have is that the player is in quite a bit of pain, and that the swelling around the injured ankle has not subsided much. So the best thing for us to do at the moment is to send him for an X-Ray which he will undergo on Tuesday. Once we receive the results we will be able to better understand what, if any, damage has been done to his ankle.”
Uncertain lay off time
Milner further confirmed to kaizerchiefs.com that as yet there is no confirmation if Mathebula will need any time off to recover from the injury, or whether or not he will be able to participate in Chiefs next league outing this Saturday evening against Ajax Cape Town.
Those decisions will be made once the Chiefs medical staff have a clearer understanding of the total extent of David’s injury, this will only become clearer to them later this week.
