Kaizer Chiefs played their first match of 2008 on Sunday afternoon in Stellenbosch when they took on Vodacom League side Vasco Da Gama in a friendly match. Khenyeza got the only goal in a game played in windy conditions.

Amakhosi coach Muhsin Ertugral used the game to hand his entire non injured squad members who are currently on camp in the Western Cape some game time. Ertugral was full of praise of the younger members of his team for their input during the game. Apart from Cyril Nzama who was nursing a calf injury, Ertugral used twenty four players during Sunday’s encounter - he change his entire starting eleven at half time.

Youthful vigour

Prior to the game, the Chiefs coach had said that these practise matches were the opportunity for the young players to stake a claim for first team football. On Monday morning he told kaizerchiefs.com that he was well pleased with the performances of a number of the youth brigade as he said.

“Wayne Matle showed some great touches, his ball distribution was magnificent and he was able to hold the ball up in midfield for long periods of time which helped us control and dictate the pace of the game. Sihle Mbambo started out the game playing in a central midfield position and we moved him centre back, he was outstanding in both roles he was able to demonstrate his versatility”.

One touch

The only Chiefs goal of the game came early in the first half and the Chiefs coach complimented his team for the goal, saying that it was a true team goal with the move starting all the way in the back and ended with Khenyeza rounding off the move.

As he said “ our goal was a typically team worked goal Jimmy started off the move from the back and he got the ball up front, and eventually Kaizer Junior got the ball to Mabhudi who rounded off the effort. I was well pleased with the build up play and our over all short passing and inter passing during the match was brilliant, there are a lot of positive things for me to take out of this game and it shows that the work we are doing during the camp is paying off”.
