Amakhosi are the annual friendly’s defending champions after they walloped Phunya Sele Sele 4-2 last year and lifted the trophy for the second consecutive year. This year’s clash will take place on Sunday 14 October at the Free State Stadium.
“Macufe Cup is the last official event of the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) and the pride of many football lovers,” said Ben Moseme of C-2. “We started this competition in 2003 and over the last ten years, we’ve had a sold-out stadium – we believe this year will be no different.”
This year’s affair is expected to be more exciting for the Amakhosi faithful as the team stands a chance of making it 3 in a row over Celtic and keeping the trophy.
Speaking at the launch, Bernard Parker encouraged supporters to come out in numbers and wear their Amakhosi colours with pride. “As players we know what will make them happy, so we will do our best to ensure we win the match convincingly as we’ve done in the last years. Most members of the team will travel for the match with the exception of those who are doing duty for their respective countries.”
Celtic, who are under the tutelage of Steve Komphela, started the season like a house on fire and continue to be a threat to all their opponents. They will not be easy opponents for Amakhosi but the Glamour Boys will do their best to ensure the Gold & Black army of supporters leave the Free State Stadium with pride and bragging rights.
“We know it’s a friendly match, but it’s important to do well and boost our confidence. We need more competitive matches of this nature to ensure that we are fit and combat-ready for upcoming league engagements,” concluded Parker.
Siwelele and Amakhosi will face each other at the Free State Stadium on Sunday, 14 October (kick-off is at 15:00). If the match ends in a draw, proceedings will move straight to penalties.
