The Derby will end Kaizer Chiefs’ three-year usage of the FNB Stadium as their home venue, with the facility set to undergo major construction in order to prepare it for 2010 World Cup action.
Saturday’s Derby will be the 129th official match between the clubs (excluding abandoned matches, as well as pre-season and other friendly encounters).
Kaizer Chiefs’ overall record against Orlando Pirates, since the PSL came into being at the start of the 1996/97 season is a solid one, which shows that the Mighty Amakhosi have beaten their famous rivals on 12 occasions out of 30 matches played, with 10 of the games having ended in draws.
The scene is set for a thrilling 90 minutes of goal-mouth action as both teams were victorious in their respective mid-week PSL matches. The Buccaneers beat Santos 3-2 and the Mighty Amakhosi dominated Amazulu with a 2-0 win.
“Kaizer Chiefs is privileged to have had FNB Stadium as its home for the past few seasons. We will take many years of fond memories with us as we prepare to move to our temporary home ground, Loftus Stadium in Pretoria, following this weekend’s Derby,” said Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Manager Jessica Motaung.
“We trust that our loyal fans will come out in great numbers to be a part of SA soccer history, when Kaizer Chiefs play host to the famous Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates for the final time at FNB Stadium on Saturday.”
“We have ensured that a star-studded pre-programme consisting of Kaizer Chiefs soccer stars of the past, top music acts and competitions galore, will keep soccer fans in Derby mood in the build up to the big match,” she added.
Former Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United defender Lucas Radebe will be among a host of Amakhosi Legends that will be placing up their boots to show that the skill of yesteryear is still with them today, when they take on a SAA Managers team at 13h00.
Radebe will be joined by the likes of Shakes Kungoane, Ryder Mofokeng, Johannes ‘Bricks’ Madau, Rudolph Gardner Seale and Ntsie Maphike, in what should be 70 minutes of diski-style soccer at its best.
The Derby promises to allow fans to share in the party of all parties with music artists such as kwaito star Mgarimbe, township pop, maskandi group hero Shwi NoMtekhala and hip hop sensations Teargas, set to put have the fans on their feet jiving to the beat ahead of the big match kickoff.
Vodacom, the official sponsor of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, will be present during the halftime interval, when three lucky finalists in the Vodacom ‘Meet the Coach’ competition will each draw a ball to discover their fortune.
The prizes at stake are cheques to the value of R20 000, R10 000 and R5 000.
Over and above the R20 000, the winner will get the opportunity to attend a Kaizer Chiefs training session and share their views with the coach of the Mighty Amakhosi as well as the chance to be photographed with their favourite player.
In the Festive spirit of giving, Vodacom have come to the party to provide the second and third placed finalists with a Vodacom hamper comprising of a Vodacom starter pack and cellular telephone, a Vodacom kit bag, an autographed team photograph, an official Kaizer Chiefs team jersey, and a soccer ball to accompany the cash that they have won.
Fans will be able to share in that winning Derby feeling when leading retail chain store Pep Stores hosts a competition which will see several lucky soccer fans participating in a penalty shoot out, with R15 000 to be won. The association between Kaizer Chiefs and Pep Stores is a strong one with Amakhosi merchandise on sale at Pep Stores nationwide.
The Pep competition will take place during the halftime break of the curtain-raiser between the Kaizer Legends and the SAA team.
Add in the gorgeous and talented Amakhosi Shakers who will be on hand to further spice up the Derby pre-match mood and it is clear that FNB Stadium is the place to be on Derby Day.
The ‘Kaizer Chiefs Cares’ element will be ever present as the club demonstrates its commitment towards the education of the youth in our country with regard to the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
In the month of December, which is dedicated to Aids awareness, Kaizer Chiefs will make use of red boot laces on their match footwear and have the Aids logo placed on their playing jerseys. The players will also wear Aids Awareness-branded tops during their pre-match warm-up routines.
Stadium gates will open at 09h00 on match day and tickets for the Derby are available at Computicket outlets nationwide at R20 (adults) and R10 (juveniles).
