Kaizer Chiefs go into their next fixture in the DStv Premiership against SuperSport United on Sunday at Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville off the back of a confidence-boosting 4-0 triumph over Chippa United last time out.
Amakhosi will now be looking to end a four-game winless run in league action against SuperSport and turn around their fortunes against a team, who have long proven to be a tough customer for Chiefs.
As they head into the game Chiefs will have looked at their opponents’ recent form and the fact that they are yet to lose a game as well as currently occupy second place.
For Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho, all of these factors are not a concern. Of the game, he says: “I don’t look at the table. I have been looking at their players, who their on-form guys are, and who I will need to be giving attention to. We know the game will be tough, but their current form and results don’t concern me.”
Mathoho and Chiefs will be looking to turn around their recent run of results against SuperSport which has seen Amakhosi fail to win their last four league games against them, with Chiefs’ last league win over SuperSport United coming on 12 December 2018
“We are ready to fight,” adds Mathoho. “We know SuperSport have given us problems in the past, but we are ready for them this time around.”
United have over the years proven to be a challenging opponent for Amakhosi. This will be the 51st PSL era league meeting between the teams. In the previous 50 meetings, Chiefs have won 13 to SuperSport’s 19 games, with 18 further meetings ending in a draw. When SuperSport have been the hosts, Chiefs have fared well. Of the 25 games with SuperSport as hosts since 1996-97 each team has won 7 games with 11 draws.
Chiefs striker Bernard Parker who has come up against them on numerous occasions believes that Chiefs can get a positive result from their meeting with Matsatsantsa.
“Games against SuperSport United are always good games because they have a good structure and teams that are well equipped,” says Chiefs veteran striker Parker. “We know they are strong from set plays and they have a lethal front force. We did play them in a friendly game earlier in the season. We did well in the game, which is a tip to the guys on what SuperSport will be about.
“For the past two years, we have done well against teams who are on form. We saw this in the Champions League as well. It’s good for us and it is motivational to win the game. They are very solid and it’s up to us to apply ourselves. After winning our last game, it will be good for us going into this game.”
The game will be Baxter’s 98th league game in charge of Chiefs which will see him go level with Ernst Middendorp in joint second place on the list of Chiefs coaches in the PSL era. Only Muhsin Ertugral is ahead of them.
Kick-off for the match is at 17h30 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
