Chiefs came spectacularly from a goal down to defeat Wits University 2-1 at the Johannesburg Stadium, as they followed up their SAA Supa8 Cup title from a week ago by advancing to the ¼ Finals of the Telkom Cup.
It was Chiefs hero from a week ago Rotson Kilambe who once again provided Chiefs with the winning edge, as he scored a brace and collected the man of the match award and the ten thousand rands that came with it. The victory was made sweeter for Coach Ernst Middendorp as he celebrated his 48th birthday on Saturday, and will have additional cause for celebration on Saturday evening.
In a game which The Amakhosi dominated for most part it was expected that they would have the first chance at goal, it came Shaun Bartlett’s way but he was unable to control his third minute header as he went agonizingly close to opening the scoring. With Chiefs making their intentions clear to the opposition that they were in no mood to slouch around, they started enforcing their dominance on the game by creating a number of openings.
Starting with Gert Schalkwyk who made space for himself before unleashing a shot from distance on seventeen minutes, Moeneeb Josephs the Wits goalkeeper was able to deal with the shot. A few minutes later and Josephs goal was under threat again as, Rotson Kilambe won the ball in a dangerous position. The Chiefs striker held off the Wits defence and got the ball out to Arthur Zwane, Josephs rose to out the return pass that was intended for Kilambe.
With all the possession and dominance that they had Chiefs were unable to turn it in to goals and got a wake up call just before half time, when Wits Brazilian midfielder Julio Danilo. Sent in a beautifully floated ball from the right hand side into the Chiefs 18 yard area, where an unmarked Wits player Ashraf Hendricks seared the highest and headed past Rowen Fernandez to give Wits the lead.
Chiefs returned a goal down for the second half but were not disheartened as they again began the second period, in the same swash buckling fashion that they ended the first period in. Patrick Mayo came close to level matters for Chiefs when he headed just wide of Josephs post past the hour mark, as Chiefs missed another opportunity to level matters, Wits always posed a threat and could have ended the game as a contest on 74 minutes. They really missed a glorious opportunity when a long searching ball found Abram Raselemane, who sent a ball into the Chiefs 18 yard area which beat Fernandez as well as his intended target Marcos De Jesus.
With ten minutes to go Ernst Middendorp threw everything into attack as he brought on Kaizer Junior, in a bid to help Chiefs find a much sought after equalizer it almost came when Shaun Bartlett flicked on a long ball goal wards and as Radebe pounced to take his shot Nhlanhla Kubeka came across and cleared the ball. On eighty three minutes Chiefs got the goal they were looking for as Rowen Fernandez sent a long ball to Kaizer Junior who rolled the ball to Rotson Kilambe who struck first time and beat Josephs to send the match into extra time.
Extra time kicked off with Chiefs again on the front foot and Rotson Kilambe forced Moeneeb Josephs, into making a superb one handed save with a close range header after he had met a cross from the right side with great accuracy. Kilambe though did not have to wait long to complete his brace as he did so on a 100 minutes, when Wits defender Ashraf Hendricks made a mess up of his clearance and Kaizer Junior headed the ball forward to David Obua who in turn found Rotson Kilambe. Who was in no mood to miss and he blasted the ball past Josephs who had run out in an attempt to stop Obua, but Chiefs attacked with rapid speed and the Wits keeper was helpless in stopping the ball.
The Students had come to the Johannesburg stadium, with a giant killing reputation after they inflicted defeat on Chiefs in a league game earlier in the season, which to date has been Chiefs only defeat in an official game this season. It seemed as though they stood on ceremony and were far from the mean attacking machine they were in that September victory, Chiefs though did control the game and showed more of a hunger and desire to win the match. Ernst Middendorp will have left the Johannesburg Stadium one happy man as this special day has become an even happier birthday.
