Kaizer Chiefs played out to a 0-0 draw in their DStv Premiership clash with TS Galaxy on Wednesday evening at the FNB Stadium. A game which could have gone either way saw Chiefs play a good defensive line as they kept their second successive clean-in the league. Galaxy also missed a first half penalty when Wayde Lekay nonchalantly stepped up and side footed his 28th minute spot kick onto Daniel Akpeyi’s crossbar.
The action began in the 4th minute after a high ball from Galaxy defender Bevan Fransman got to Lebogang Manyama. Manyama who wore the captain’s armband stepped up and swung the ball in from the right goal-wards. The ball evaded the Galaxy defence as well as three Chiefs players. Mulomowandau Mathoho, Willard Katsande and Kogtso Moleko failed to get a touch which could have taken the ball into the back of the net with the Galaxy defence all at sea.
With Chiefs doing well to hold their lines at the back, Amakhosi were patient and looking to exploit the Galaxy lapses at the back. In the 20th minute, Galaxy’s keeper Wensten van der Linde had to run off his line and under pressure from a few Chiefs players, he punched clear a corner from the left by Bernard Parker.
It was end-to-end stuff in the 25th minute with Tshegofatso Nyama being played into space on the right with a long ball across the ground which evaded Philani Zulu. Nyama took control of the ball before shooting from close range at Daniel Akpeyi with a powerfully driven shot, which the Chiefs keeper managed to block and palm away. That launched Amakhosi on a counterattack with Bernard Parker played into space, he ran through on goal. With Khama Billiat to his left and Manyama to his right, he opted to carry on running, but lost his footing and fell over and the danger was averted.
Three minutes after that, a mistimed challenge by Moleko on Lindokuhle Mbatha in the Chiefs penalty box after Mbatha had originally skipped past a tackle from Daniel Cardoso, saw him roll over and referee Tshidiso Mkwanizi pointed to the spot giving Galaxy a penalty. With some uncertainty amongst the visitors as to who should take the kick, Wayde Lekay stepped up and sent his kick crashing against the cross bar and the score remained 0-0.
The final act of the first half saw Akpeyi come off his line and narrow the angle as he blocked an effort on goal from Lekay in the first half stoppage time, as the first half ended goalless.
At the half time break Chiefs made a change with Manyama making way for Leonardo Castro. His first involvement came in the 50th minute as he tried to take the ball of van der Linde after he received a back pass but was adjudged to have fouled the Galaxy keeper. He did test van der Linde in the 55th minute with a shot from range from the left but the Galaxy keeper was able to stand firm and make the save.
Castro was making a nuisance of himself and in the 66th minute he managed to get on the end of a cross by Zulu from the left, but his header was wide of the mark. Shortly thereafter, Parker blazed an effort over the bar after being played into space by Billiat.
Chiefs continued to be frustrated and in the 76th minute were unable to make good on another opening they created, Billiat had laid off the ball to Parker on the edge of the 18-yards area. He in turn played it towards Castro whose first time shot at goal was blocked.
A minute on and Galaxy’s substitute Shaune Mogaila began with a run in his own half taking on Cardoso and Njabulo Blom before trying to dink the ball over Akpeyi who had come off his line to stop him. The ball flew up and as it looked to be looping back towards goal Mathoho got back to head the ball clear off the goal-line.
In the final minute of the game, Billiat was able to take advantage of a defensive lapse and raced goal-wards from the halfway line but he rushed his effort and drove the ball wide. In referee’s added time at the end of the second half, Billiat would head over a cross from the left by Parker over the goal as the game ended 0-0.
Amakhosi have now gone two league games without a loss and picked up their first league points at home for the season, as they now turn their attention to Saturday’s MTN 8 Semifinal second leg against Orlando Pirates.

This was the first ever league meeting between Chiefs and TS Galaxy.
