Kaizer Chiefs                        (1) 1 (Manyama 21’)

Kaizer Chiefs ended 2019 with a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United in wet and rainy conditions at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Amakhosi are now undefeated in their last nine league games having won eight. Chiefs took the lead in the 21st minute when Lebogang Manyama headed them into the lead. Maritzburg equalised in the 34th minute through Judas Moseamedi. Daniel Akpeyi saved a penalty from Daylon Claasen midway through the second half to ensure that Chiefs came away from their travels with a vital point in their bid to keep themselves ahead of the chasing pack at the top of the table.

Chiefs first chance of the game came in the third minute with Khama Billiat driving a volley from the left wide across goal. Amakhosi took the lead in the 21st minute when Samir Nurković chased down a ball over the top. The Serbian took the ball wide and sent in a cross towards the danger zone where Manyama climbed up to meet the ball with his head - his headed effort brushed off Rushine De Reuck and went past the helpless Richard Ofori to give Chiefs the lead.

In the 28th minute, Chiefs launched a quick counter attack which saw Nurković storm up the right flank he managed to find Manyama in space, who in turn sent in an inviting ball to George Maluleka who was lurking on the edge of the Maritzburg 18- yard area. Although Maluleka made contact with the ball he sent it wide over the Maritzburg goal.

Manyama was again at the heart of another Chiefs attack in the 33rd minute as he managed to pick out Castro with a pass along the ground. As the Colombian closed in on goal, he unleashed a powerful shot which Ofori blocked at his near post. From the resulting corner Maritzburg were awarded a free kick and launched a quick counter attack with Ofori launching the ball long, which bounced under Willard Katsande who tried to clear the ball. Moseamedi then picked up the loose ball and raced towards goal, with Daniel Akpeyi closing in on him he placed the ball beneath the Chiefs keeper to level the scores in the 34th minute.

The first half ended 1-1.

Chiefs made a substitution at the start of the second half with Dumsani Zuma coming on to replace Leonardo Castro.

The first major talking point of the second half coming in the 66th minute when Katsande at the second attempt at trying to clear the ball was adjudged to have brought down Keagan Buchanan just inside the Chiefs 18-yard area.

Referee Victor Gomes pointed to the spot, Claasen took the spot kick which Akpeyi saved diving to his right to push the ball on to the right hand upright and eventually to safety. It was the second time this season Akpeyi had saved a penalty in a league game he also stopped a spot kick against SuperSport United in a 1-1 draw back on the 24th August.

Chiefs had a close encounter in the 72nd minute when Claasen headed a cross from the right towards goal it hit Siyabonga Ngezana and bounced beyond the diving Akpeyi, but it hit the right hand up a reprieve for Chiefs.

In the 78th minute Billiat made his way into the Maritzburg 18-yard area and with sight of goal he tried to curl the ball around Ofori, his effort lacked any power as the Maritzburg goalkeeper made a routine save. In the final ambers of the game,  Akpeyi made a crucial save stopping and effort from Micah Lea'alafa.

The game finished 1-1 as Chiefs end 2019 seven points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership table ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns.
