AET Highlands Park wins 5-4 on penalties
Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the Nedbank Cup in acrimonious circumstances after losing to Highlands Park on penalties in a last 16 clash at the Makhulong Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Highlands had taken the lead in the 57th minute through Peter Shalulile. Chiefs found themselves back in the game when Sello Motsepe turned a George Maluleka free kick into his own net. With the match ending 1-1 after 120 minutes, the game headed into a penalty shoot-out where Highlands prevailed winning the game 5-4 on spot kicks.
Highlands Park had the first attempt on goal in the opening minutes when they sent a free kick towards Bevan Fransman. The ball was headed to the opposite end which put Luckyboy Mokoena into space, but he sent his effort over goal.
In the 6th minute. Chiefs did well to initially deal with a Highlands Park corner from the left, but Mokoena hacked the ball back towards goal with an overhead kick which Fransman flicked into the path of Shalulile. It took quick thinking from Itumeleng Khune who raced off his line and slid into the path of the Highlands Park attacker and blocked his shot, stopping the ball between his legs.
In the 21st minute, Chiefs launched an attack which eventually saw Kgotso Moleko lay off the ball to Anthony Agay on the edge of the 18-yard area, the Kenyan international launched a shot at goal which Highlands goalkeeper Marlon Heugh was unable to properly bring the ball under control. With Chiefs players looking to take advantage of the rebound, Heugh was bailed out by his defence who cleared the danger.
A first half which saw both teams attack with intent with the ball moving rapidly from end to end finished 0-0.
At the start of the second half, Chiefs made a double substitution in with George Maluleka coming on for Anthony Agay and Dumsani Zuma replaced Bernard Parker.
The start of the second half was highlighted by a thunderstorm which saw most of the fans clearing out of the stands as they opted not to weather the storm, the rain making the pitch heavy and the ball slippery.
The first chance of the second half saw Shaun Mogaila storm down the right and he laid the ball off trying to pick out Lindokuhle Mbatha. Khune seemed to get the deftest of touches to the ball with his outstretched leg. Which put Mbatha off his stride when the ball did reach him, he dragged his effort wide - this happening in the 52nd minute.
In the 57th minute the deadlock was broken when Mokoena floated a free kick from the left over to the opposite end, the ball floated over the Chiefs defence which was attacked by Shalulile who managed to knock the ball home with his knee to hand Highlands Park the lead.
In the 62nd minute Chiefs were back in the game. A well floated free kick from Maluleka saw Mulomowandau Mathoho put Motsepe under pressure, which resulted in the Highlands Park defender heading the ball past Heugh into his own net to make the score 1-1.
Having found their way back into the game, Chiefs went close to taking the lead in the 70th minute. Lebogang Manyama floated in a free kick from the left which Mathoho was able to meet but his glancing header goal wards went wide of the mark.
Chiefs had reason to feel aggrieved in the 74th minute when Zuma was up ended inside the Highlands Park 18 yards by Richard Mbhele, in what should have been a penalty for Chiefs, but instead referee Jelly Chavani turned down Chiefs appeals for a penalty.
In the 80th minute Mathoho came in the way to head for a corner an overhead kick from Ryan Rae which looked to be heading for a goal. In the 85th minute Abdi Banda should have received a harsher punishment than just a yellow card after he kicked Samir Nurković off his feet, sending the Chiefs striker tumbling to the ground.
Deep in referee’s added time at the end of the second half, Manyama swung in a corner from the left, Heugh failed to make contact with the ball as he attempted to punch clear the ball fell to Willard Katsande at the back post, but he sent his header over the post. With the game ending 1-1 after 90 minutes, a further 30 minutes of extra time was needed to decide a winner.
In the 113th minute Khune showed all his years of experience as he moved from one end of his goal to the other as he sprawled across the ground to stop a shot from Musa Nyatama, after he had been set up by Shalulile. In the last minute of extra time, Samir Nurković went close to grabbing a winner with a shot from a tight angle. The game ended 1-1 and headed to a penalty shoot-out.
In the shoot-out Daniel Cardoso was first up for Chiefs he converted his kick sending Heugh the wrong way. Limbakini Mzava then converted Highlands first kick. Mathoho then put Chiefs 2-1 up in the shoot-out. Mbatha made it 2-2 in the shoot-out, before Manyama again put Chiefs ahead converting Amakhosi’s third kick to make it 3-2.
Rodney Ramagalela then sent Highlands third kick high over the cross bar, Maluleka then did like wise sending his kick high and over. Shalulile then made it 3-3 when he converted Highlands fourth kick. Willard Katsande ensured the pressure would be on Highlands as he sent home his kick which was Chiefs fifth in the shoot-out, Fransman managed to make it 4-4 sending his kick home.
In sudden death Khama Billiat hit the post after sending Heugh the wrong way with Chiefs sixth kick, Nyatama then stepped up and converted Highlands kick to ensure they won 5-4 on spot kicks and progressed to the next round.
Fact of the match:
Chiefs were participating in the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup in the PSL era for the 21st time and it was the 10th time Chiefs had lost at this stage.

All three Nedbank Cup Last 16 games that Chiefs have participated in with Ernst Middendorp have needed extra time to decide a winner.
