The first game takes place on Sunday, 29 November at the Limbe Omnisports Stadium in Limbe, with kick-off at 16:00 (SA Time). Chiefs will then host the Cameroonian’s in the return leg. The date, venue and kick-off time will be confirmed soon.
Chiefs qualified for the 2020-21 CAF Champions League by virtue of finishing as runners up in the 2019-20 PSL season. PWD Bamenda qualified for the tournament as they were declared champions of Cameroon’s top-flight Elite One Championship. The league was called as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak. At the time, Bamenda were leading after having played 28 rounds of the tournament. They were a point ahead of Coton Sport and had played a game less. It was Bamenda’s first ever top-flight title in Cameroon.
As the game cannot be played in the North West Region and the city of Bamenda where PWD hail from, the first leg on 29 November will be played in the South Western coastal town of Limbe instead.
While this is Chiefs’ first game in African competition against a team from Cameroon and first game in Limbe, Chiefs players Itumeleng Khune and Mulomowandau Mathoho featured for Bafana Bafana in a 2017 AFCON qualifying game against the Cameroon national team in Limbe, which ended 2-2.
Bamenda are making their competition debut in the CAF Champions League and it will be Chiefs’ sixth participation in the tournament. The Glamour Boys were South Africa’s first representatives in the competition after the country’s readmission to international football in 1992. The Glamour Boys featured in the 1993 event when it was still known as the African Club of Champions Cup. Chiefs also participated in the tournament in 2005, 2014, 2015 and 2016, Amakhosi last participated in African club competition in 2018-19 when they were in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The winner of this encounter will face Angolan side Primero de Agosto in the first round of the CAF Champions League. Those games are scheduled for late December and early January 2021.
