Kaizer Chiefs (2) 2 (Simmons 9’, Masombuka 21’)
Kaizer Chiefs U-13s staged a remarkable comeback to win their final group game of the Lucky Star Cup at the Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, in a top of the table clash in Group A against Chelsea Bridgetown. With Chelsea already through, Amakhosi needed a point to join them in the Quarterfinals and a win to progress as group winners. After going down early through a Matt Barends goal, Chiefs came back with goals from Kenneth Simmons and Sfiso Masombuka turning the game in Chiefs’ favour.
Chiefs had goalkeeper Mondli Mmema to thank early on as he was diving at full length to stop a ferocious shot at goal in the third minute. Two minutes later Chiefs found themselves behind when Chelsea striker Matt Barends was able to find a path to goal and placed the ball beneath Mmema to give Chelsea the lead.
Amakhosi though fought back and Sima Bobo asked questions of Chelsea goalkeeper Bradley Mabali with a shot from distance, which the Chelsea keeper had to be at full stretch to stop. Chiefs got themselves level in the 9th minute with Simmons scoring his second goal of the tournament after Chelsea keeper Mabali had spilt a shot. The Chiefs striker showed his killer instinct to send the ball over the line.
In the first minute of the second half, Chiefs’ keeper Mmemamisjudged the ball as he came out to make a clearance, Chelsea’s Micqaeel Abrahams managed to get to the ball first and he pushed it past Mmema with the ball grazing the left hand up right as it went out.
Chiefs turned the tied in the 21st minute of the 30-minute matchwith Sfiso Masombuka netting the game winner with a shot along the ground from the left edge of the penalty area which went across goal and past Mabali to win the game for Chiefs andsend them top of the group.
Amakhosi will next be in action at 10:35 on Sunday morning when they will participate in the Quarterfinals against the Runners Up from Group B, which ended up being the Amakhosi’s Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates – they finished behind Ajax Cape Town in their stream.
