Amakhosi found out Sunday evening after their inspired quarterfinal win in the MTN8 against Maritzburg United earlier in the day that their MTN8 semifinal opponents would Orlando Pirates. The draw for the final qualifiers was conducted at the conclusion of the last eight clash which saw hosts Mamelodi Sundowns go down 1-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic. Chiefs were drawn out of the hat to face archrivals Orlando Pirates in the last four their first meeting in the MTN8 against Pirates in over five years, while SuperSport United and Celtic will meet in the other semifinal.

Chiefs last meeting against Pirates who overcame Cape Town City in their quarterfinal clash on Saturday evening in this competition was a memorable one as they defeated them in the final of the 2014-15 tournament 1-0. Tefu Mashamaite scored the game’s only goal to give Chiefs their 15th MTN8 title.

Overall, this will be the eighth time the teams will be meeting in this competition in the PSL era. Chiefs were 1-0 winners when they first met in PSL era in the 2001-02 semifinals as well as the 2014-15 final. Pirates managed to overcome Chiefs on the two previous occasions they met in two legged semifinals winning 2-1 on aggregate in both 2010-11 and 2013-14. Pirates also won the 2011-12 final defeating Chiefs 1-0 with Oupa Manyisa scoring the game’s only goal.

Historically the first clash in this competition between Chiefs and Pirates came in the 1972 final which Pirates won 3-2. Chiefs have recorded two sizeable wins in the competition over Pirates. They defeated them 6-2 on aggregate in the 1974 final, winning the first leg 2-1 and the second 4-1. While in the 1975, the first leg of the semifinals ended 3-3. Chiefs won the second 5-1 for an 8-4 aggregate win.

Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has tasted success over Pirates in the competition previously, most notably during the 2016-17 tournament when his Wits team overcame them 2-1 in the quarterfinals, before eventually going onto lift the cup defeating Sundowns in the final.

The first leg of the semifinals is due to take place on the last weekend of October, while the second leg will take place in the first weekend of November, Pirates will be at home for the first leg while Chiefs will be the hosts for the second game.
