Amakhosi fans can own an iconic Kentucky Rounder thanks to Vodacom
Vodacom and Kaizer Chiefs will offer one lucky fan the chance to WIN an icon this season and climb into the driver’s seat of a custom-built ‘Kentucky Rounder’ (Toyota Corolla) in the team’s style and colours.
Vodacom’s new Sisonke Siya Winna campaign will be the drive behind 2020/2021 PSL Season as it celebrates two iconic cultural symbols that are rooted in the history of Soweto and which are a part of the fabric of South African football culture – Kaizer Chiefs and the Kentucky Rounder (Toyota Corolla Twincam e90).
Brad Abrahams, a restorer of authentic vehicles, and his team have been tasked with the custom build of the vintage Kentucky Rounder that will be handed over to the lucky Kaizer Chiefs fan at the end of this season.
“This is a car that is all about nostalgia. For Kaizer Chiefs fans, it takes them back to a time when their team started their journey of being a dominant force in African football.”
This car represents the era when the great Doctor Khumalo was at his peak and was nicknamed 16 Valve, and even had his own pair of football boots with the same nickname. Fans have very fond memories of that time, and this is what we want to capture in our rebuild. We want to give them an emotional connection to that time,” says Abrahams.
And according to Abrahams, the lucky fan will not only be receiving an iconic car but also a world leading collectible.
“South Africa is very interesting when it comes to cars from this era. As a result of our political history, we were removed from the rest of the world. But there was still a marketplace here, and a very hungry audience for these cars. We never got what the rest of the world got, but that gave us the liberty to create our own identity with these cars. To the extent that these are now collectibles. There are really very few countries in the world that are leaders in the restoration of the Toyota Corolla Twincam e90, and South Africa is one of them.”
Abrahams and his team will be focused on blending the authenticity of this car with the Kaizer Chiefs team colours and famous Amakhosi logo.
“With this build we’re very focused on style. Everything is going to be clean and well put together with a strong attention to detail. And it will be capped off with a beautiful paint finish and a nice set of ‘shoes’.”
Where possible, the car will be upgraded with more modern technology but not to the extent that the true spirit of the vehicle is compromised.
“We’ll also have some very nice customization of the car according to the Kaizer Chiefs brand. So here I’m talking about subtle custom emblems for the wheels, and some customization of the seats and headrests with the Amakhosi logo. It will all be finished off with that iconic yellow and gold of Kaizer Chiefs.”
For Sibongile Mthimunye, Senior Soccer Specialist at Vodacom, the Kentucky Rounder prize perfectly captures the spirit of the Sisonke Siya Winna campaign.
For over 20 years Vodacom has sought to speak to the passion of the Kaizer Chiefs fans and their club. This is about all of us as a collective sharing in the history and nostalgia of this iconic club. So we’re celebrating icons, and the Kentucky Rounder is an integral part of this cultural identity. The Sisonke Siya Winna campaign is all about enriching the fans’ experience of this iconic era.”
