AET Chiefs win 4-2 on penalties

Kaizer Chiefs played out an energy sapping Telkom Knockout Cup quarterfinal clash against Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday afternoon. Amakhosi despite going a goal down initially managed to fight back and won the game on penalties. After 120 minutes the game ended 2-2 with Fortune Makaringe scoring for Pirates and Leonardo Castro for Chiefs in the 90 minutes, while in extra time Chiefs took the lead a Daniel Cardoso penalty before Gabadinho Mhango levelled for Pirates.

Chiefs were dominant in the opening exchanges and thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd when Samir Nurković headed home a cross from the left. As the Serb striker ran off to celebrate, the assistant referee raised his flag to rule the goal out for offside. Television replays though showed that the Chiefs striker was onside, and the goal should have stood.

Amakhosi did not let that decision hold them back and in the 26th minute came up with another chance as a well delivered free kick from the right, saw Leonardo Castro meet the ball powerfully with his head and it drew a save out of Wayne Sandilands who pushed the ball over the post for a corner.

Pirates conjured up a chance in the 29th minute, a quick one-two between Vincent Pule and Kabelo Dlamini saw the latter put the ball over the Chiefs defence with Pule running onto the ball, he met it and knocked it against Akpeyi’s right hand post.

Just past the half hour mark Pirates should have been reduced to ten when Thembinkosi Lorch stamped on Khama Billiat after tackling him to the ground. The Pirates man all picked up a yellow card.

Pirates took the lead in the 34th when Tshegofatso Mabasa did well to bring a long ball from the right by Lorch under control and played the ball towards goal, where Daniel Cardoso managed to initially deal with Lorch as he went for goal. But Lorch was able to hold the ball up and rolled it into the path of Fortune Makaringe who wasted no time in driving the ball home to put the visitors ahead.

Pirates went into the break 1-0 ahead.

Ernst Middendorp made his first change when he brought Dumsani Zuma on for Willard Katsande at the start of the second half.

Five minutes into the second half Pirates were reduced to ten men when Mthokozisi Dube already on a yellow card picked up his second caution, as he fouled Khama Billiat after the Chiefs midfielder had gone past him and was heading towards goal. Dube receiving a red card, he received his first yellow card in the 43rd minute.

Coach Middendorp made a change when Bernard Parker came on for Njabulo Blom in the 56th minute.

Chiefs made their numerical advantage count in the 62nd minute when they managed to draw level. It took some good work from Lebogang Manyama to keep the ball as he battled away with the Pirates defenders. Manyama fed the ball through to Billiat he went for goal curling the ball round Sandilands, but it crashed against the post as it came out again Castro reacted quickest and drove the ball home to being Chiefs level.

A 72nd minute corner from the left for Pirates saw Pule rise highest to meet the ball. His header forced Akpeyi into making a goal-line save, as he pushed the ball out for a corner. Five minutes on Akpeyi did well to dive full length to his right to push away a strike from the edge of the area from Mabasa.

With the game ending 1-1, it headed into extra time. In the second minute of which Chiefs were awarded a penalty when substitute Abel Mabaso handled Mathoho’s effort on goal after he had made contact with a Bernard Parker cross from the right.

Cardoso who had missed a penalty against Cape Town City in the last 16 of the Telkom Knockout stepped up and converted the spot kick. Even though Sandilands guessed right Cardoso was spot on as he put Chiefs 2-1 ahead.

The drama was not over, and Pirates managed to get themselves level in the 100th minute. Lorch did well with a run down the left he squared the ball towards goal, where substitute Gabadinho Mhango ran towards the ball and stroked it home to level the game at 2-2. Akpeyi made himself big to deny Makaringe from close range blocking his shot in the 106th minute.

With the teams level after 120 minutes, we headed to a penalty shoot-out. Both teams scored their opening two spot kicks before Akpeyi saved Pirates third kick, taken by Ben Motshwari. Chiefs then converted their third kick from Manyama. While Pirates were to have their fourth from Mabaso saved by Akpeyi, Bernard Parker converted Chiefs fourth kick to send the Amakhosi through to the semifinals.
