Two first half goals from striker David Radebe coupled with goals scored at the end of each half by Serge Djiehoua, ensured that the Kaizer Chiefs reserved team opened up their account in the newly formed PSL pilot reserve league. With an emphatic 4-1 win over Benoni Premier United reserves on Monday afternoon on Gauteng’s East Rand at the Actonville Stadium in Benoni. Although they were matched pound for pound by their hosts in the opening exchanges, the Chiefs reserves did manage to dominate for large spells in the game, and the score line could have been more comprehensive.

The game started at a frantic pace with Benoni kicking off the game and attacking straight from the start, with Bongani Twala running down the right wing and playing in Abino Adebayo. Who wasted no time in dispatching the ball goal wards, Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune was up to the challenge and pulled off a brilliant stop, Chiefs immediately counter attacked and the ball found its way to David Radebe. The Amakhosi striker raced down the right and into the Benoni penalty area, where he proceeded to blast the ball past Tsengwa to give Chiefs the lead.

In the 13th minute Chiefs were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Benoni 18 yard area, with the goal in striking distance Serge Djiehoua launched a powerful strike at goal, Tsengwa acrobatically met the ball and pushed it over the cross bar to safety. After Chiefs had wasted a number of scoring opportunities they were made to pay dearly for squandering all those opportunities, when on 22 minutes Twala cut up the Chiefs defence. With an excellent through ball to Parker who was able to beat the Chiefs offside trap, and rounded Khune before knocking the ball home to level matters.

Just past the half hour mark and Benoni could have stolen the lead, once again Itumeleng Khune came up trumps when called into action as he first got down and made a perfectly time one handed save from an angle shot by Parker on the right side. He found his feet in time to make a full length save at point blank range, off the rebounded shot taken by Moloi from inside the six yard area. Ten minutes on and Scara Ngobese turned on the style with a pass which caught the Benoni defence flat footed, with the intended recipient Stephen Faba collecting the ball.

Faba sent in a pass across the ground to David Radebe who from close range scored to restore Chiefs lead, two minutes later and Chiefs went further in front. This after Tsengwa up ended Ditheko Mototo which resulted in Chiefs being awarded a penalty and the Benoni Goalkeeper collected a yellow card, Serge Djiehoua stepped forward and dispatched the kick to give The Amakhosi a 3-1 lead going into the break.

The second half saw Chiefs trying to press home their advantage once again the Amakhosi were wasteful in front of goal, it began early in the second half when Serge Djiehoua played in David Radebe. With the goal at his mercy and with an opportunity to have completed his hat trick, the Chiefs striker proceeded to send the ball wide, and the chance went a begging. A familiar pattern was beginning to form as was the case in the first half, as Chiefs attacked Benoni were happy to counterattack and could have pulled a goal back just before the hour mark. When Adebayo found himself in some space close to the Chiefs goal, he could not hit the target and instead dragged his shot just wide of Khune’s goal.

David Obua on as a second half substitute could have added his name onto the score sheet but could not control his shot, and missed the target altogether after Scara Ngobese had done all the hard work and played him into space on the edge of the Benoni 18 yard area. As Chiefs pressed for the fourth goal it seemed like they were destined not to find the net a fourth time, on 75 minutes Serge Djiehoua had an attempt at goal saved by Tsengwa’s leg. The rebound fell to Scara Ngobese whose shot went agonizingly close and Benoni survived another Chiefs attack.

As time drew to a close Serge Djiehoua was rewarded for his persistence as he volleyed home a Scara Ngobese cross from close range, to add his second goal of the game and Chiefs fourth. Victory over Benoni was the start Chiefs were looking for and they got it, The Amakhosi will be hoping to keep up their 100% record when they take on Mamelodi Sundowns Reserves, next Monday in Eldorado Park.
