Amakhosi’s U-17 team ensured the Club will have at least one trophy in the cabinet this season by winning the Vision View Easter Cup of Champions held at Pinnacle College, Kyalami on Monday.
The side coached by Tshidiso Letsholonyane, displayed admirable mental strength in holding their nerve to beat Panorama FC 7-6 in a nailbiting sudden death penalty shootout after the teams played to a goalless draw in a tensely contested final.
Amakhosi had shown their mettle earlier in the morning when they came through their quarterfinal against RESA, 4-3 on spot-kicks, following a 1-1 draw. There was no such tension in the semifinal, though, as Chiefs swept past Mamelodi Sundowns, winning 3-0 to cruise into the final.
The coach was full of praise for his players afterwards, telling www.kaizerchiefs.com, “I am really proud of these boys. This tournament was competitive. It was tough, especially physically because there is very little time to rest between games. We managed the load, even in the final with our injuries, and mentally the guys were very strong. To win two penalty shootouts says a lot about their character, so it is very satisfying to come out victorious.”
The team’s star player, Keamogetswe Moilwa deservedly won the Player-of-the-Tournament award.
