Orlando Pirates U-14 (0) 0 - Pirates wins 2-0 on penalties
Kaizer Chiefs’ U-13 team put up a gallant performance but were undone in the penalty shoot-out as they lost out to Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the Quarter-finals of the Lucky Star Cup on Sunday Morning at the Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town.
On a chilly Sunday Morning the crowd were treated to a Soweto Derby far away from Gauteng with the Chiefs U-13s who topped Group A, taking on Orlando Pirates who finished second in Group B in the U-14 stream of the Lucky Star Cup.
In a tense game, chances were few and far between with Chiefs having the first real chance of the game in the second half with the dimunitive and creative Ariel Diner testing Pirates keeper Valjean Malan with a shot from distance. Although the Pirates keeper did not make a clean catch at the first attempt, he did grab the ball at the second attempt as Kenneth Simmons attempted to turn home the rebound.
Chiefs goalkeeper Mondli Mmema made a big save three minutes from the end to ensure that Chiefs did not concede as crouched down to block a powerful angled shot from Najbulo Maktlubo, which looked goal bound.
With the score deadlocked at the end of normal time the game went into penalties Pirates converted their first kick while Chiefs captain Duane Bennett hit the post with the Amakhosi’s first kick. Pirates then converted their second kick before drama in the shoot-out. Diner’s kick, Chiefs’ second in the shoot-out was saved Malan before the assistant referee ordered a retake. Malan was unable to convert the retake either with his effort slamming off the cross bar this time around as Chiefs bowed out in the last eight.
