AmaZulu (1) 2 (Mulenga 46+1’, Majoro 85’)
Kaizer Chiefs were defeated 2-1 by AmaZulu in a league game on Wednesday afternoon at FNB Stadium. The visitors’ two goals both coming late in each half with Augustine Mulenga putting them ahead in added time at the end of the first half; then Lehlohonolo Majoro scored in the 85th with a backheel lob to win the game for AmaZulu. Chiefs had drawn level in the 67th minute when substitute Leonardo Castro converted a penalty. Amakhosi went down to ten men when Darrel Matsheke was sent off in the 72nd minute as a result of picking up his second yellow card of the game. The numerical deficiency eventually worked against Chiefs.
After a bright start from Chiefs which saw them giving AmaZulu trouble down the wings. Amakhosi suffered an early set back when Happy Mashiane had to be substituted in the 14th minute as a result of a right thigh injury.
Chiefs were handed a freekick in an advanced position on the left on the edge of the AmaZulu 18-yard area in the 21st minute. Philani Zulu swung in a cross which in the hand of Samkelo Mgwazela from the resulting freekick take by Reeve Frosler. AmaZulu were able to head the ball clear from danger.
The visitors created the first chance of the afternoon in the 32nd minute. Mulenga collected the ball after a short pass from Sibusiso Mabiliso on the left wing and strode towards his right before unleashing a ferocious shot a goal from around 25 yards out. The ball sped through the air and went over the outstretched fingertips of Itumeleng Khune and crashed against the cross bar - made a huge thud which reverberated around and empty FNB Stadium.
Mulenga did get the visitors in the lead in referee’s additional time at the end of the first half. A Chiefs throw-in close to the half-way line on the right was headed clear by AmaZulu with Mulenga winning the ball and eventually playing to Sphelele Mthembu. He in turn passed the ball to his right and found Sphelele Magubane with Khune coming off his line to stop Magubane’s shot across goal but Erick Mathoho was on the line to clear the ball. It fell to Mulenga who controlled it with his right leg and then drilled it home from close range with his left as he side-footed the ball home.
Amazulu lead 1-0 at the break.
Chiefs were being stifled by AmaZulu who were defending deep but did manage to conjure up a good opportunity. Just past the hour mark, Frosler was able to glide the ball in towards goal from the right where Samir Nurković was able launch himself at the ball and headed it goal wards. Veli Mothwa stood his ground and made a save at his near post by getting down to push out a hand and block the ball.
Shortly thereafter Magubane found himself put clear on goal as Khune came off his line. The AmaZulu man tried to push the ball past the Chiefs keeper but Khune managed to push the ball away with his left hand. It fell into the path of Mthembu, but he rushed his shot and blazed the ball over the bar.
Chiefs were handed a way back into the game when Tapelo Xoki held back Nurković in the 66th minute inside the penalty area and Chiefs were awarded a penalty. Leonardo Castro opted to take the spot kick. He gently strode up and sent Mothwa the wrong way converting his penalty to draw the game level at 1-1.
Then there was drama in the 72nd minute. First a pass back by Nurković was picked up by AmaZulu and eventually the ball reached Magubane out on the right side of the Chiefs 18-yard area, he blasted the ball goal-wards driving the ball past Khune, but his effort came careening off the cross bar. Chiefs were then reduced to 10 men shortly there after when Matsheke was shown a second yellow card and Amakhosi had to finish the game a man less.
With five minutes of regulation time, a corner from the right by Mthembu saw Khune come off his line and he punched the ball up in the air, as it fell down, Majoro with a piece of amazing skill backheeled the ball and it flew up and over the Khune and into the back of the net.
Deep into referee’s optional time at the end of the game, Frosler delivered a beautifully weighted ball, which saw Nurković tower above the defence and send a powerful header goal-ward. The effort had goal written all over it until Mothwa leapt into the air and at full stretch managed to stop the ball.
That was it as Chiefs ran out of time and went down 2-1. Amakhosi rued their missed chances and with a numerical disadvantage in the final 18 minutes, they were unable to close out the game and will now turn their attentions to their next league game at home against SuperSport on Saturday.
