Kaizer Chiefs were edged 1-0 by Cape Town City in a highly entertaining game at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening. Amakhosi were by far the better side, got an abundance of good goalscoring chances, but lady luck was not on their side.
Coach Ernst Middendorp gave Sunday’s debutant Happy Mashiane another run, thanks to his excellent performance against Tornado FC.
Back in the line-up was Khama Billiat, who was rested on the weekend, and Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, who returned from a one-game suspension.
Chiefs played in a 3-5-2 formation with Ntiya-Ntiya (on the right) and Mashiane (left) occupying the wing positions. Kgotso Moleko, Daniel Cardoso and Teenage Hadebe were the three centre-backs.
Amakhosi started the game at a high tempo, trying to put City on the back foot from the beginning.
The visitors sustained an early set-back when former Chiefs striker Siphelele Mthembu got injured and had to be replaced by City’s recent signing, Kermit Erasmus.
Billiat was enjoying himself and seemed refreshed creating constant danger to the City defence. Hendrick Ekstein and Bernard Parker were also doing well, playing just behind the Zimbabwean, who played as the deepest striker.
The Glamour Boys created a number of great goalscoring opportunities, the best of which fell for Billiat and Parker. City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh was kept busy and had to make numerous saves.
The visitors, on the other hand, didn’t come to FNB Stadium to just sit back and defend and got their own chances to put the ball in the back of the net, with goalkeeper Virgil Vries having to make two brilliant reflex saves to keep the ball out of the goal.
Moleko had to replaced just before the half-time break due to having sustained a concussion. He was replaced by Siyabonga Ngezana.
It was a positive and spirited performance of Amakhosi in the first half, which fully deserved at least one goal. Half-time, however, arrived, with the score remaining goalless.
Coach Middendorp brought on Leonardo Castro for Bernard Parker at the start of the second half.
Chiefs continued to be the better side in the second half.
Mashiane again delivered some fine crosses in the box, while substitute Castro worked hard up-front. Willard Katsande, meanwhile, anchored, as usual, the midfield, making some good interceptions to win the ball.
But, as in the first half, City goalkeeper Leeuwenburgh stood several times in the way of a goal for Amakhosi.
There was a fine opportunity for Castro in the 68th minute, but the ball was just worked over the crossbar by the visitor’s keeper. From the resulting corner, the ball was worked out of the City box and landed in front of Ntshangase, whose powerful shot hit the upright.
It was, however, City that, against the run of play, scored the game’s opening goal. The ball was delivered from a free-kick high into the Amakhosi box. Goalkeeper Virgil Vries went high up for the ball, but struggled to catch the ball. City’s Edmilson Dove was in the right spot to finish from close range, 0-1.
That’s the moment when coach Middendorp brought on another striker, Ryan Moon for Mashiane.
There was more drama when City’s Zukile Kewuti was sent off for coming in with his studs high up on Ntshangase in the 83rd minute.
Amakhosi tried to press and press even more thereafter, but the visitor’s kept it tight at the back.
Chiefs had an abundance of chances to score, while City basically got three opportunities. It shows again that not always the best team wins, as Amakhosi fully deserved the three points after a fine performance being the better team through the 90 minutes of play.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
Happy Mashiane again delivered a fine performance, while Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya did well on the right flank. Daniel Cardoso was in charge of the defensive line, while Siphelele Ntshangase delivered some telling passes to the attackers. In the end, Cape Town City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh was selected as the Man of the Match.
