Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates avoided meeting each other in the Bob Save Super Bowl semifinal draw conducted at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon.

The possibility of Chiefs lining up against Pirates in the semifinals so soon after their recent league match ended in tragedy at Ellis Park, looked a distinct possibility after Sundowns had eliminated Manning Rangers 1-0 after extra-time.

But after the names were thrown into a hat, Sundowns will visit the winner between Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic, who meet in a delayed quarterfinal tie at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday.

On the same day traditional Soweto rivals Pirates also line-up against Moroka Swallows at the FNB Stadium and the winner will be up against Clive Barker's Santos in the other semifinal in Cape Town.

There had been a few upsets in this year's Bob Save Super Bowl, except for First Division side Maritzburg City who eliminated Ajax Cape Town and Sporting knocked the stuffing out of PSL affiliates Classic.

But normality soon returned as Maritzburg's fairytale ended as predicted when Santos proved too strong and too experienced for the lower division side despite being restricted to a narrow 1-0 victory.

However, the spotlight will be focussed on both Chiefs and Pirates, who gave the impression of being rusty or unable to have shaken off the cobwebs of "Black Wednesday" at Ellis Park a fortnight ago.

Chiefs might have eliminated Stade Tamponnaise 2-1 in a second leg African Cup Winners Cup tie in midweek, but they huffed and puffed throughout the night and were far from convincing.

On the same day, Pirates seemed to have been suffering from a hangover as they couldn't stamp their authority over 10-men Bush Bucks and to rub salt into the wounds, lost the league game 1-0.

If anything, both games indicated that players from the Chiefs and Pirates camps had not yet overcome the psychological trauma of the Ellis Park disaster and time is fast running out if they hope to advance to the finals.

Chiefs and Pirates players selected for the Cosafa Castle Cup match against Mozambique in Maputo on Sunday, are likely to be withdrawn by their respective teams for the Bob Save Super Bowl challenge that lie ahead.
