Kaizer Chiefs played out a 1-1 draw with Bloemfontein Celtic in a DStv Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening. Chiefs took the lead after nine minutes when a short corner by Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was clinically headed home by Anthony Akumu Agay, after being assisted by Khama Billiat. Celtic found an equaliser in the second half when Tumelo Mangweni did well to finish a lobbed layup from Ryan De Jongh in the 67th minute.
Chiefs steadied their nerves early on by keeping hold of the ball and keeping things tidy at the back. They took the initiative in the game with a well worked corner in the 9th minute, with Chiefs being awarded a set piece on the right. Ngcobo rolled the ball to Billiat who curled the ball delightfully towards goal, where Akumu timed his run perfectly getting between Tebogo Potsane and Siphelele Luthuli, peeling away from the latter before leaping off the ground to head the ball into the corner of the goal past Jackson Mabokgwane, who was helpless to prevent Chiefs going 1-0 up. Akumu featuring in his fifth DStv Premiership game of the season scoring his first goal of the campaign. It was Billiat’s third league assist of the season.
Chiefs broke down a Celtic attack in the 22nd minute with Daniel Cardoso playing a short pass to Ngcobo who sped up the field playing another neat one-two with Leonardo Castro, before cutting the Celtic defence apart with a ground ball to Billiat on the left. He in turn raced towards goal created space for himself and tried curling the ball round Mabokgwane but his effort missed the target, with Chiefs unable to double their advantage.
Amakhosi were in control of the game and in the 37th minute, a well worked team move culminated with Billiat neatly backhealing the ball into the path of Njabulo Blom, who drove the ball towards goal with a ball which zipped along the ground. It had Mabokgwane diving low to his left to make the save and deny Chiefs from adding to their lead.
In the final minute of the half Blom and the Celtic keeper were in a dual again. Lebogang Manyama sent him on his way to goal with a well weighted pass, as Mabokgwane came out to thwart him, Blom managed to get past him but lost control of the ball which allowed the Celtic keeper to recompose himself and grab the ball by diving at the feet of Blom and plucking the ball away.
Chiefs led 1-0 at the break - the first time they had taken a lead into the halftime recess this season in a league game.
Celtic made four changes at the start of the second half.
Chiefs conjured up their first opportunity of the second half in the 59th minute a free kick from the left by Billiat was floated deep into the Celtic penalty box. It saw Mulomowandau Mathoho rise up above Celtic’s Thato Lingwati. He managed with a slight touch to find Castro beyond him with just Mabokgwane to beat, the Chiefs attacker sent his effort wide of goal.
Daniel Akpeyi ensured that Chiefs held onto their lead in the 65th minute after a Celtic freekick from the right was floated in what looked like a tame header from Victor Letsoalo, took a deflection of Mathoho and had Akpeyi scrambling to his left to stop the goal going beyond him.
Celtic found an equaliser shortly thereafter when they found the back of the net in the 67th minute. De Jongh deftly lifted the ball over the Chiefs defence and found Mangweni, who jumped up stuck a leg out brought the ball under control and drove the ball past Akpeyi to make the scores 1-1, as Celtic’s two second half substitutes combined to bring parity.
The game ended with both teams sharing the spoils, as it ended 1-1. Chiefs closed out the year in the DStv Premiership and will now turn their attention to their next assignment which is a CAF Champions League First Round First Leg game against Angolan side Primero De Agosto on Wednesday evening.
