“We are coming to compete,” says Amakhosi’s Under-18 coach Sundra Govinder. “We will never underestimate any opponent, but we will go all out to win the tournament.
“On the other hand, we won’t put our players under too much pressure, as it’s a development tournament. Also, most teams will field players born in 2000, while we go with boys born in 1999 and even younger. We will basically field an Under-17 side for an Under-18 tournament. However, that’s good, as that’s how the players learn most.”
Chiefs will be in Group A, together with Soweto Stars, Polokwane City Rovers and Mamelodi Sundowns.
There will be a strong Amakhosi squad, including goalkeeper Sandile Ngobese, midfielders Tshepo Mohlala and Sabelo Radebe, while up-front there is the dangerous trio of Innocent Nzama, Yaseen Bunting and Lebohang Lesako. The captain of the Under-18 side is defender Njabulo Blom.
The quarter-finals will take place, after the group stages are finished, on Saturday. Two teams of each group progress to the quarters. The final will be held on Sunday.
