It was Amakhosi’s seventh league title since 1978. The victory on Saturday ended a frustrating 12-year drought. Before this match, Chiefs had last won the title in 1992 with former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe in their team.
Chiefs needed two points in their last two fixtures (Swallows and Wits) to run away with the title. The Glamour Boys put up a great display of football coupled with fine individual skills to secure maximum points.
Zambian junior international Collins Mbesuma, who had come under fire from some quarters of the supporters after the Orlando Pirates game, brought Kaizer Chiefs closer to their first title in 12 years with a superb first half goal. It was his second goal in three starts.
Man-of-the-match Mbesuma headed Chiefs in the lead on 16 minutes after collecting a good cross from Thabo Mooki on the right. The Birds were penalised for their inability to clear an earlier attack from Chiefs with John Moshoeu’s effort blocked and the ball falling kindly to defender Cyril Nzama on the right.
Good persistent play by Nzama, who did well to put pressure on Hendricks, finally slipped the ball to second half substitute David Radebe to put Chiefs further ahead on 84 minutes.
The victory took Chiefs to 62 points, eight ahead of second-placed Ajax Cape Town, who won 3-2 against Black Leopards on the same day.
"I'm so relieved. This takes a whole load off our shoulders and we dedicate the title to our supporters who have been so patient," said Amakhosi MD Kaizer Motaung.
Mbesuma came close to grabbing his second of the day on 27 minutes with Moshoeu doing well to head in his direction. The Zambian star could have scored a hat-trick on the day bar for some woeful shooting.
There was more misery for Swallows later in the game as they were reduced to 10 men three minutes before the break. Chiefs had exerted pressure with Moshoeu headed towards goal but Swallows keeper Greg Etafia pulled down the veteran midfielder after he had lobbed the ball over his head. Referee Jerome Damon wasted no time as he flashed a red card for Etafia. This meant a forced change for Swallows with Conrad Hendricks, a former Chiefs player, coming on for Edzai Kasinaiyo.
Swallows fought back strongly in the last quarter of the game but Chiefs stood their ground and never gave anything away. Alois Ngwerume came close with a cracking shot on 74 minutes. The shot almost embarrassed Baloyi who needed a second bite to save.
