Kaizer Chiefs (0) 1 (Castro 60’)
Golden Arrows (2) 2 (Mzava pen 27’, pen 31’)
Golden Arrows got the better of Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership match at KwaMashu’s Princess Magogo stadium on Saturday night. The home side won 2-1. Arrows got 2-0 up in the first half thanks to two penalties, while Leonardo Castro countered with a goal in the 60th minute.
Amakhosi started the game positively with an eye on attacking whenever possible, even though it didn’t result in many clear-cut goalscoring opportunities.
Kabelo Mahlasela was magnificent in mid-week against Zanzibar’s Zimamoto and was awarded another start against Arrows. He was not as good as on Wednesday night, but he still troubled the opponent’s defence several times.
Bernard Parker also looked dangerous, while Leonardo Castro was, as usual, working hard up-front even though he didn’t always get the supply he was probably hoping for.
Khama Billiat, the scorer of three goals on Wednesday, was lively again and made some good runs of-the-ball.
However, against the run of play, the home side scored the opening goal. They were awarded a penalty by referee Eketsang Setloboko, who adjudged that Erick Mathoho had brought down Lerato Lamola. It looked as if the referee might have got that wrong. Limbikani Mzava netted from the spot in the 27th minute, 1 - 0.
Mzava again took the ball to take a penalty four minutes later, when the referee again put the ball on the spot, this time because he felt that Teenage Hadebe had brought down Siboniso Conco in the box. Mzava also slotted the second penalty home, 0-2.
Chiefs continued to have most of the ball possession, although, as before the two goals, it didn’t result in many real chances to put the ball into the back of the net.
To make matter worse, heavy rain poured down, which made the already poor pitch even more difficult to play conducive football on.
Amakhosi went 2-0 down into half-time break.
Chiefs continued to dominate the game in the second half and, better, started to get more threatening entries into the Arrows box.
Slowly, pressure was building on the Arrows defence, getting closer and closer to find the back of the net.
It was in the 60th minute that the Glamour Boys got their goal. The ball was bouncing around in the box before Ramahlwe Mphahlele kicked the ball from inside the box to just in front of goal, which found Castro’s eager feet, 2-1.
Mphahlele got, however, injured in the action and had to be taken off, being replaced by Daniel Cardoso.
Amakhosi fought hard to get the second goal. Matters were, however, not helped by Arrows players continuously falling on the ground, indicating that they were injured, which didn’t help the flow of the game and Chiefs’ chances, putting continuously pressure on the backline of the home side.
There were good goalscoring opportunities for Billiat, Erick Mathoho and George Maluleka, but the ball didn’t want to go past the Arrows goalkeeper.
Sadly, the equaliser didn’t come and, as a result, Chiefs lost 2-1 to Arrows.
Key moment in the match:
The key moment was probably the first penalty given to Golden Arrows by referee Eketsang Setloboko. Television replays seemed to indicate that Erick Mathoho didn’t bring his opponent down in the box. But the referee decided otherwise.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
Leonardo Castro proved again to be a nuisance to the opponent, Khama Billiat. He wasn’t at his best, but still showed his class on numerous times, while Bernard Parker also did well, above all in the first half. However, it was Golden Arrows’ central defender and captain, Mngwengwe Nkanyiso, who was selected as the Man of the Match.
