Kaizer Chiefs (0) 1 (Zuma 82’)

Cape Town City (1) 2 (Martin 14’, Mashego 61’)

Goals from Craig Martin and Terence Mashego and a late goal from Dumsani Zuma saw Chiefs fall to a 2-1 loss to Cape Town City at the FNB Stadium in the DStv Premiership.

Chiefs’ loss was their fourth league loss in succession in what was the club’s 800th league game since the formation of the PSL in 1996-97.

Eleven minutes into the game Keagan Dolly unleashed Nkosingiphile Ngcobo with a delightful, chipped ball over the Cape Town City defence. Ngcobo in turn got the ball to Khama Billiat, who noticed the run from deep by Njabulo Blom down the right flank, with Blom, trying to play the ball back towards goal to pick out the Zimbabwean international, but Taariq Fielies made a headed interception to avert a dangerous Chiefs move.

Cape Town City were content with sitting back in the opening quarter of the game and absorbed Chiefs pressure, before launching a counterattack of their own in the 14th minute. Fielies from deep inside his own half sent the ball long, where Daniel Cardoso tussled with Craig Martin, the Chiefs defender in his attempt to head the ball back to keeper Brandon Petersen came up short and the speedy Martin slid in to hit the ball home and put the visitors 1-0 ahead against the run of play.

Chiefs had to resort to taking shots at goal from distance with Keagan Dolly testing Hugo Marquez on a number of occasions. While his attempts were on target, they did not have the beating of the Cape Town City keeper. With halftime closing in Jaeden Rhodes pinched the ball from Siyabonga Ngezana, raced down the left and sent in an inviting ball towards Mduduzi Mdantsane, who connected with the ball but it was blocked by Reeve Frosler. On the follow up he was unable to reconnect properly with the ball and the chance went astray.

Cape Town City led 1-0 at half time.

Chiefs went out early in the second half to get an equaliser and were sprightly with a number of shots from range at goal. Just as Chiefs were growing in the game, they again were caught out on the counterattack. Mashgeo linked up with Craig Martin down the left before launching a powerful drive at goal from a tight angle on the left, the ball taking a slight deflection off Petersen before nestling in the back of the net and putting the visitors 2-0 up.

Chiefs made a flurry of changes in the second half and those coming off the bench seemed to turned the tide. Chiefs found a way back into the game with eight minutes to go, Billiat’s initial effort at goal was stopped by Marques.

The rebound fell invitingly to Zuma, who tapped the ball home and gave Chiefs a chance with time running out.

In the final minute of the game Zuma had another chance at goal but this time Marques was able to block his attempt at goal as Chiefs fell to a home defeat.
