Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns will this afternoon kick off their 2021/22 season with an MTN8 quarterfinal clash in Pretoria. The game will see Chiefs fielding four new recruits who were recently signed, while there will be four other new faces on the substitutions’ list.
The two teams meet by virtue of finishing 1st and 8th on the log at the end of last season. Sundowns will have the advantage of playing hosts after being crowned league champions in June.
The two teams were busy in the transfer market and supporters will get to see some of the new players try to book a spot in the teams’ starting berths.
Itumeleng will start in goal for Chiefs after his heroics in the preseason friendly, which is the Carling Black Label Cup two weeks ago.
The defence will be slightly different with Sifiso Hlanti playing on the left and Njabulo Blom moving from midfield to right of Chiefs’ defence. The central defence is unchanged with Daniel Cardoso and Mulomowandau Mathoho.
The midfield will have newcomers Cole Alexander and Phathutshedzo Nange working with Bernard Parker. In the wings, Chiefs will have Kgaogelo Sekgota on the right and Khama Billiat on the left.
Amakhosi’s attack will be led by Samir Nurković.
Khune will reclaim the captain’s armband this afternoon.
The referee of the match is Victor Gomez. Assistant referees are Zakhele Siwela and Moeketsi Molelekoa. The fourth official is Joseph Makhubo.
The blockbuster MTN8 quarterfinal match between Amakhosi and Masandawana will kick off at 15:00 at Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria. No spectators will be allowed in the stadium. The game will be live on SuperSport Channel 202 on DStv, SABC 1 and various SABC Radio stations, with regular updates of the match on Twitter @KaizerChiefs.
