There was to be heartache for Chiefs in their final game of the campaign as they drew 1-1 with Baroka at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon. The result saw Mamelodi Sundowns finish ahead of Chiefs on the standings as they defeated Black Leopards in their final game. Chiefs took the lead with a well taken finish by Khama Billiat in the 39th minute, Baroka levelled matters in the 59th through Manuel Kambala.
With the title on the line, Chiefs made their intentions clear early in the 6th minute when Daniel Cardoso swung in a cross from the right. It evaded the Baroka defence and Lebogang Manyama attacked the ball but was unable to make the decisive contact with the ball as it bounced out for a goal kick.
Some well-timed defending from Mulomowandau Mathoho in the 12th minute saw him deny Baroka. Firstly, he got up to block a long ball that was intended for Evidence Makgopa. The loose did fall to Makgopa but Mathoho got up to make the block when the Baroka player did manage to get his shot away.
In 14th minute Samir Nurković managed to collect a throw in by Kgotso Moleko from the right. He did well to control the ball with his chest and managed to evade the attentions of both Ananias Gebhardt and Vusi Sibiya. Before attempting a shot, a goal from a very tight angle and he tested Baroka keeper Elvis Chipezeze with a lower driven drive at the near post, the Baroka keeper managed to block the ball and sent it out for a corner.
Chipezeze was tested again in the 22nd minute when a clearance from a Chiefs corner by Thamsanqa Masiya fell to Reeve Frosler He drove from around 25 yards from goal with power towards goal. His effort looked to be heading in until Chipezeze managed to jump off the ground and block the ball.
Chiefs had the Baroka goal under siege. In the 37th minute, Nurković sent a ball in from the right looking for Khama Billiat. He could not control the ball and it eventually fell to Lebogang Manyama who sent the ball back towards Billiat. With his back to the goal, Billiat controlled the ball and attempted an overhead kick which went over the Baroka goal.
Two minutes later Billiat broke the deadlock scoring for a second game in a row. A long ball from Itumeleng Khune saw Nurković get ahead of Derwin Farmer and chest the ball towards Billiat. He in turn picked up the ball moved to his left past Bongonkosi Makume before firing the ball lower along the ground past Chipezeze to put Chiefs ahead. With six minutes to go to half time Chiefs were 1-0 up.
Chiefs led 1-0 at the end of the first half.
There were no changes at the start of the second half.
Just before the hour mark, Baroka equalised. A long raking free kick from Gerald Phiri Junior was sent deep into the Chiefs penalty area, where Kambala towered above the Chiefs defence to head home and level scores in the 59th minute.
Chiefs threw all they could into attack but as the half wore on. Their opponents who needed a point to avoid the relegation play-offs, slowed the game time with Chipezeze being cautioned for time wasting.
In the fifth minute of time added on at the end of the 90, Chiefs had a final chance to score the match winner but Mathoho’s header off a corner from the right went wide of goal. That was the last chance of the game.
Chiefs despite missing out on the title will end the season in second place and qualify for next seasons CAF African Champions League.
