“The Chiefs jersey is so wow!”, enthused Cricket Brennan, who is visiting South Africa from New Jersey, America. She immediately bought the new Amakhosi Home jersey and got them signed by the six Glamour Boys - Siphiwe Tshabalala, George Maluleka, Gustavo Páez, Keagan Buchanan, Lorenzo Gordinho and Edmore Chirambadare.
The players were all present at Totalsports Sandton City between 18:00 and 20:00 on Wednesday.
Pule Ramasimong didn’t plan to buy the new jersey yet, but when he and his wife strolled past the Totalsports and saw the Chiefs players, he couldn’t resist and even bought two new Home jerseys.
“They are for my children in Cape Town,” Ramasimong says. “They really love Kaizer Chiefs and they will be so happy.”
The Glamour Boys were not only signing jerseys, but also had specially-made autograph cards to hand out with an action photo from the player. They also posed for pictures.
Páez was one of the players proudly signing jerseys and autographing cards. “This is just amazing,” the Venezuelan striker commented on all the people filling up the shop to buy the new jerseys.
“I especially love the Away jersey, which is black with gold horizontal stripes,” he continues. “Both new jerseys are very comfortable, they fit very well and are quite light as well.”
“It’s always great to see that wherever you go there are Kaizer Chiefs supporters,” Chirambadare reacted after putting his autograph on yet another jersey. “It’s fun to be here, I really enjoy this kind of interaction with the fans.”
Then, a family enthusiastically enters the shop, a mother with three youngsters. One of them buys the new Home jersey. He is Cole Tuckett, attending Crawford College.
“Siphiwe Tshabalala is my favourite player,” he points out, explaining that “I play in the same position as Shabba. I can’t believe that I now got his autograph.”
“What a great atmosphere,” says Totalsports salesperson Jonas Mthombeni. “A lot of people are coming into the store to get autographs and take pictures with the players. We are selling a lot of jerseys.”
Mthombeni is an Amakhosi supporter. “Shabba is my icon,” he says, while adding that he got a jersey autographed for himself as well.
Just before closing time, at 20:00, the American Brennan enters the shop. She’s on a visit in South Africa. Earlier on the day, she heard about Kaizer Chiefs and now, in the evening, she actually bumps into some Glamour Boys.
“I love soccer jerseys,” Brennan adds, while putting on her just-bought Chiefs jersey. Accordingly, she poses with Tshabalala and the other players. “I can’t believe that I meet the scorer of the opening goal at the 2010 World Cup. I vividly remember that goal. I will never forget this and I will be a Kaizer Chiefs supporter for the rest of my life.”
