Kaizer Chiefs 1 (Maluleka 8’)
Baroka FC 2 (Macha 23’, Mothupa 57’)
What Happened?
The team lost their first home game of the season at the second home venue in Durban when they hosted Baroka FC in front of a crowd of no less than 20 000 supporters at the Moses Mabhida stadium.
Amakhosi went into the match with the intention of collecting maximum points after failing to beat Baroka in their maiden season in the PSL last year.
George Maluleka returned for the Glamour boys after missing the team’s two last matches due to injury. He replaced Willard Katsande who was suspended for one match after receiving his fourth caution in last weekend’s match against Golden Arrows. Wiseman Meyiwa came back after starting on the bench last week and Khotso Malope joined Maluleka in the middle of the park.
George Maluleka threatened early in the match with a shot that went over the bar in the 6th minute after received a pass from Siphiwe Tshabalala. Two minutes later the midfielder made no mistake when he ballooned a powerful shot that hit the upright and kissed the net, making it 1-0 for the hosts.
Baroka threatened for after confusion in the 12th minute but Mduduzi Mdantsane’s shot went slightly wide.
In the 22nd minute, Siphiwe Tshabalala was brought down just outside Baroka’s box and the referee awarded a free kick to Amakhosi. Shabba took the free kick but hit it straight at the Baroka’s goalkeeper, Virgil Vries, who collected the ball without much difficulty.
Baroka equalised in the 23rd through Lewis Macha’s header.
Striker Gustavo Páez was stretchered off the pitch in the 32nd minute after twisting his ankle after a tackle from Punch Masenamela. Masenamela was booked for the foul.
Hendrick Ekstein had a chance to score Amakhosi’s second goal after dribbling past Baroka’s defenders but his final shot was blocked.
Páez came back onto the pitch for a short spell but his injury proved serious enough that he could not continue, forcing coach Steve to bring Bernard Parker on in the 37th minute.
The last few minutes of the first half were a ding-dong affair but nothing there were not real threats until the referee blew his whistle for half time.
The second half started with a lot of vigour from Amakhosi.
Baroka made a double change when they brought Gift Motupa on in the 46th minute after taking out Siphelele Ntshangase and Robin Ngalande on for Mduduzi Mdantsane.
The home team threatened as early as the 48th minute, keeping Baroka’s defence and goalkeeper busy.
Ekstein was fouled in the 54th minute outside the box and Shabba took the kick but it was stopped.
Baroka went ahead in the 59th minute when Gift Motupa’s solo effort resulted in a good goal for Bagaga ba ga Mphahlele
After some more great work from ‘Shabba’, Ekstein got the ball just outside the box, but his shot at goal didn’t hit the target.
Coach Steve made his second change by bringing debutant Dumsani Zuma on for Jayiya
In the 62nd minute Zuma arrived a millisecond late to latch onto a beautiful pass from Shabba, but Vries cleared the ball,
Zuma threatened again in the 65th minute but his shot went over the bar.
In the 74th minute, coach Thobejane rested Lewis Macha and brought on Mzwanele Mahashe’s fresh legs.
Four minutes later coach Steve made his last change of the match when William Twala came on for Wiseman Meyiwa in the 78th minute.
The home team was pressing hard and the Baroka found themselves under pressure.
In the 79th minute Tshabalala tried a curler but it went wide of the goalposts.
Parker was fouled in the 80th minutes but the kick the free kick taken by Shabba did not threaten Baroka’s goal.
With time not our side, Chiefs were pushing hard to grab the equaliser which proved elusive.
Mathoho came close to scoring in the 87th minute but his header was saved by Vries.
Ekstein’s 88th minute shot went over the bar.
After failing to score, Steve Komphela’s boys found themselves on the losing side, despite numerous goal scoring opportunities.
Gustavo Páez early exit from the match affected the team adversely as the coach had to change his plan and the team’s lost its fire power.
It was a game Amakhosi would like to put behind them, as losing at home is undesirable for any team.
The boys tried hard to change the result but it did not work out.

The moment was Maluleka’s stunner from range after his return from an injury that saw him miss the team’s last two matches.
What it means:
It means that Chiefs have now collected nine points from seven matches – two wins, three draws and two losses. The Glamour Boys are in fifth position on the log table.
On the other hand, Baroka are at the top of the log with 15 points.
