In the past two seasons Kaizer Chiefs have travelled up the N1 Highway to Pretoria and returned victors from their league visits to face Mamelodi Sundowns, last season Chiefs won 2-1 and the season before in 2019-20 Amakhosi were 2-0 victors. So as Chiefs head to Loftus to face Sundowns on Sunday in a crunch league clash we take a look at three memorable away Chiefs league victories in recent times.

7^th May 2001 (2000-01)

Sundowns 0 Kaizer Chiefs 1 (Evans o.g. 89’)

Chiefs were searching for their first away league win against Sundowns in the PSL Era when they were hosted by the ‘Brazilians’ in May 2001, Chiefs had gone four away league games into the new PSL without an away league win against Sundowns. When they broke that run in a game which saw them dominate the game and it took a comical own goal from goalkeeper Paul Evans, who under pressure from Siyabonga Nomvethe late in the game turned the ball into his own net. With Chiefs winning the first league game between the sides that season at home, this win saw Chiefs complete a league double over Sundowns in the PSL Era for the first time.

19^th February 2005 (2004-05)

Sundowns 3 (Masehe 9’, Sapula 57’, Mthombeni 83’)  Kaizer Chiefs 4 (Radebe 43’,

Mbesuma 45’, 59’, 61’)

A feisty seven goal thriller at Loftus saw Chiefs edge Sundowns 4-3 Paulos Masehe gave the hosts the lead in the 9^th minute, just before half time Chiefs scored two goal through David Radebe and Collins Mbesuma and had Emmanuel ‘Scara’ Ngobese sent off at the end of the half.  Godfrey Sapula made it 2-2 in the 57^th minute, despite Chiefs numerical deficiency Amakhosi levelled scores again through Mbesuma on 59 minutes. Two minutes later the Zambian completed his hattrick to put Chiefs 4-2 up, Joseph Mthombeni scored a third for Sundowns inside the final ten minutes. Chiefs held out and Sundowns were reduced to 10 men themselves deep into stoppage time with Saka Tiene given his marching orders.

27^th October 2019 (2019-20)

Sundowns 0 Kaizer Chiefs 2 (Nurković 6’, 78’)

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane was attempting to throw Chiefs off balance with his mind games in the build up-to the game, it had no effect on the outcome as Chiefs won 2-0, Samir Nurković showed his sharpness in front of goal scoring in the 6^th minute and then sealing the win for Chiefs in the 68^th minute with a deadly finish from close range. Amakhosi claiming all three points in an exciting game that produced end to end action, with Chiefs game plan falling into place as they collected a fourth successive league win. A match which promised a lot lived up to its billing as games between Chiefs and Sundowns continue to build on the rivalry between the teams.
