Chiefs are record 13-time champions of the Nedbank Cup, South Africa’s elite knockout cup competition. No other team has won as many trophies as Amakhosi have in this tournament. Amakhosi first won the Nedbank Cup in 1971 when the trophy was known as the Life Challenge Cup, defeating Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a replayed final after the first game had ended 2-2.
Last season Chiefs reached their 19th Nedbank Cup final played at Moses Mabhida. Amakhosi will be determined to go one better this season and will be looking to start on a good note against Royal Eagles who hail from Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal and are currently campaigning in the second tier of South African Football.
Royal Eagles defeated Moroka Swallows on penalties in their preliminary round tie of the 2019/20 Nedbank back on 29 November after the game ended 1-1 after extra time.
In addition, Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp will be looking to lead the club to his second Nedbank Cup glory, and his third final with the club in this tournament. In addition to taking Chiefs to last season’s final, he also led the Glamour Boys to Nedbank Cup glory in 2005/06 when the competition was known as the Absa Cup.
Tickets for the game will be sold via TicketPro on their website (www.ticketpros.co.za) at R40 per ticket. They will also be sold at various news agents and other outlets including CNA, Jet, Spar and Edgars outlets Nationwide.
