Kaizer Chiefs (1) 2 (Ekstein 30’, Zuma 56’)

Kaizer Chiefs beat Cape Town City 2-0 in a highly entertaining Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash played at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Hendrick ‘Pule’ Ekstein netted the game’s opening goal in the 30th minute, while Dumsani Zuma added the second in the 56th minute. It was a great performance by the Glamour Boys, who will now face Chippa United away in the Nedbank Cup semi-final.
Dax Andrianarimanana was handed a starting position, replacing Willard Katsande as the defensive midfielder and partnering George Maluleka in the middle of the park.
Ekstein was back in the line-up after having missed out on Amakhosi’s last two matches before the FIFA-break.
The Glamour Boys put the visitors on the backfoot from the word go, creating a few chances with the best coming from Khama Billiat. The Zimbabwean, however, couldn’t find the back of the net.
Billiat was a continuous nuisance to the City defence, backed up by Ekstein who also did well.
Andrianarimanana, meanwhile, looked confident in his central midfield role, winning numerous balls and keeping City’s Teko Modise quiet.
The Capetonians, on the other hand, struggled to come out of the blocks and didn’t even create a single chance in the first 30 minutes of play.
It was therefore more than justified for Chiefs to score the opening goal, which duly arrived in the 30th minute. City’s Edmilson Dove lost ball possession to Billiat in his own half, with the Zimbabwean quickly passing the ball to Parker.
‘Die Hond’ directed the ball sideways to the incoming Ekstein, who neatly finished from close range, 1-0.
Amakhosi totally dominated the first half, although no further goals were added, despite getting a few chances to do so. To be fair, Chiefs should have gone into the half-time break with one or two more goals in their pocket. It wasn’t to be, though.
Dumsani Zuma was brought on at the start of the second half for Ramahlwe Mphahlele. Zuma slotted in on the right side of the midfield.
Chiefs played well and continued to put pressure on the City defence early on, which meant that the visitors often didn’t come to a proper build up from the back, which is usually one of their strengths.
Parker was another who did excellently in this game and seems a completely different player since Ernst Middendorp took charge of Amakhosi late last year.
There was another great opportunity for Chiefs to add the second goal in the 55th minute, but Parker’s ball was blocked from ending in the back of the net by a City defender.
From the following corner, however, the ball landed in front of Zuma, who nicely finished, 2-0.
Ryan Moon replaced Billiat in the 65th minute, after the Zimbabwean had suffered a knock on his leg resulting in a bruise.
City tried to come back into the game, but never really created any goalscoring opportunities. And if there was a chance, goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma was alert, dealing with any possible danger.
Chiefs fully earned the victory after a brilliant display in a sold-out Mbombela Stadium.
Key moment in the match:
Kaizer Chiefs were by far the better side in the first half and deservedly got the opening goal scored by Hendrick ‘Pule’ Ekstein in the 30th minute. It meant that Amakhosi got into half-time full of confidence to win the game.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
Several Kaizer Chiefs players had an excellent game against Cape Town City – captain Bernard Parker was very good with some clever passing, Hendrick Ekstein looked threatening whenever in possession of the ball and Dax Andrianarimanana was simply outstanding in midfield. In the end, Parker was selected as the Man of the Match, deservedly so.

Amakhosi will play Chippa United on the road in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, which will take place in the weekend of 20/21 April 2019. Golden Arrows will host TS Galaxy in the other semi-final.
