Kaizer Chiefs reached the Nedbank Cup Last 16 after beating Tornado FC 1-0 at Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The ABC Motsepe League side put up a spirited performance though, taking the cup game into extra time.
Happy Mashiane made his official Kaizer Chiefs debut against Tornado. The 20-year-old played at left-back.
Ramahlwe Mphahlele returned to the team after having recovered from injury. But with Kgotso Moleko continuing at right-back, ‘Rama’ was positioned on the right wing by coach Ernst Middendorp.
Khama Billiat, meanwhile, was given a break and didn’t travel with the team to East London.
Chiefs dominated the early stages of the match with debutant, Mashiane, delivering some fine crosses into the box early on.
Siphelele Ntshangase tried to pull the strings from his central midfield role, passing the ball around nicely.
The first real chance, however, arrived for the home side in the 22nd minute. A well-directed header looked to find the back of the net, but goalkeeper Virgil Vries made an excellent save, diving to his left.
Amakhosi also got some opportunities to score with the best coming to Ntshangase and Leonardo Castro, but the ball failed to go into the goal. Ntshangase’s shot from inside the box missed the target, while Castro’s header landed on the crossbar.
Bernard Parker was working hard as one of the two attackers, Castro being the other, but was at times a bit unlucky as the ball didn’t always get to him when he was looking for a final pass into the opponent’s box.
Coach Middendorp decided to ring the changes at half-time, bringing on Bhongolethu Jayiya for Mphahlele with the idea to give offensive movements a boost.
Chiefs came out on fire at the start of the second half, immediately putting Tornado more under pressure than during the first 45 minutes.
There was another substitution in the 57th minute with Gustavo Páez coming on for Ntshangase.
Amakhosi got a few chances, but the ball didn’t want to find the back of the net.
Still, Chiefs continued to build up the pressure on the defence of Tornado.
But there were no goals after 90 minutes of play and the game had to go to extra time and that’s when the Glamour Boys got their goal. Castro’s shot in the box was put into his own goal by Tornado’s Abongile Twani in the 93rd minute.
The home side didn’t give up, however, and tried to get back into the game pushing forward. Amakhosi, on the other hand, got a few chances to extend the lead.
It was maybe not the best performance of Chiefs this year, but it was enough to win and reach the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
It was a tougher game for the Glamour Boys than expected. Bernard Parker made some fine runs up-front, Daniel Cardoso did well in defence and Happy Mashiane delivered a great performance on debut. It was, however, Tornado’s captain Lonwabo Mhlakaza who was awarded the Man of the Match award.
What it means:
It means that Kaizer Chiefs have progressed to the Nedbank Cup Last 16.
