A second half goal by Lebogang Manyama saw Chiefs through to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup as they beat GladAfrica Championship side Royal Eagles by a goal to nil. Chiefs were full value for their win as they created a host of opportunities and were dominant throughout. In the end, a well-taken goal from Manyama was enough to see off the resistance of Eagles and send the 13 times Nedbank Cup winners to the next round of the 2020 competition.

Captain Itumeleng Khune making his first start for Chiefs since September made a routine save in the third minute getting down to deal with an attempt from close range by Mpho Maruping, who tried to stroke the ball past Khune.

George Maluleka lifted a ball towards Samir Nurković from the right, but Eagles goalkeeper Edward Maova came for the ball collided with a defender missing the ball which fell to the Chiefs striker. He was not expecting it to fall to him and missed the ball with the chance not being taken.

Maluleka was at the creative heart of another Chiefs attack in the 17th minute, after linking up well with Leonardo Castro in a series of passes between the pair down the left. He managed to lay the ball off to Castro, but his attempt went narrowly wide.

Chiefs were creating chances but were unable to convert them. It was the case in the 24th minute when Castro was able to hold up a pass, control the ball and knock it between the legs of Happy Mashau. He passed the ball to Manyama, who sent his effort from just inside the Eagles 18-yard area wide of goal.

With 10 minutes to go to the half time break, Chiefs conjured up another opportunity. Manyama fed the ball wide to the right, where Maluleka was able to send the ball at the first time of asking towards goal, where Castro came sliding in but was unable to make contact with the ball. Two minutes before half time Zanoxolo Mduli sent a snap-shot from the right edge of the Chiefs 18- yard area over Khune’s goal.

The first half ended 0-0.

Chiefs made a double substitution at the start of the second half, with Bernard Parker and Khama Billiat entering the field for Leonardo Castro and Kearyn Baccus.

Chiefs were out of the blocks early in the second half creating a good chance just three minutes in. It took a long raking ball from Maluleka to pick out Billiat who in turn laid the ball into the path of Manyama, whose driven shot at goal had Maovadiving at full stretch to make a save.

Just past the hour mark, Chiefs had a chance to break the deadlock once more. Along throw-in by Reeve Frosler from the right was met by MulomowandauMathoho, who headed the ball into the path of Billiat, who at the first time of asking jumped up off the ground and volleyed the ball goal wards, narrowly missing the mark with the Eagles defence all at sea.

Chiefs nerves were finally calmed after going close on numerous occasions when Manyama gave Chiefs the lead. It took a long ball from Khune which eventually found Frosler - he lifted the ball towards Manyama. He turned around two Eagles defenders Tshepho Tema and Mashau before lifting the ball over Maova who had come off his line, the ball seemed to linger in the air for a few seconds before bouncing over the line to hand Chiefs the lead, as he scored his 6th goal in all competitions this season.

Anthony Akumu Agay came on as an 86th minute substitute for man of the match George Maluleka. In the process becoming the first Kenyan to play competitively for Chiefs. Chiefs held out for the win as they move on in the Nedbank awaiting the draw for the last 16 to see who their next opponents in the competition will be.
