Kaizer Chiefs will jet off to Guinea on Thursday to face Horoya in their final Group C game of the 2020-21 CAF Champions League against Horoya, with the knowledge that a win in West Africa or a draw with goals will be enough to see Chiefs through to the Quarter-finals of the competition. While Chiefs will be missing goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, striker Samir Nurković through suspension, and Leonardo Castro because of a broken nose, Amakhosi do have Khama Billiat in their travelling party and will be hoping the duo will be able to play some part in Chiefs quest to get the result they need in Conakry. The game will kickoff at 19h00 local time on Saturday which is 21h00 South African time at the General Lansana Conté Stadium, on the outskirts of the Guinean Capital Conakry.
The earlier encounter between the sides in the group stages at the FNB Stadium on 23rd February ended goalless, with Chiefs finishing that game feeling aggrieved as they had a legitimate goal by Samir Nurković chalked off for offside. This time out Amakhosi will be looking to become the first South African club to win against Horoya in Guinea in the CAF Champions League, Horoya have hosted South African clubs in the CAF Champions League twice previously. At home in the 2018 group stages they drew 2-2 with Mamelodi Sundowns, a game in which current Chiefs’ midfielder Khama Billiat was on the scoresheet for Sundowns while in 2018-19 also in the group stages they won at home 2-1 against Orlando Pirates.
While outside of the Champions League they also hosted a BIDVest Wits team coached by Gavin Hunt in last season’s CAF Confederations Cup with Horoya winning 2-1 at home. Horoya are currently 11th in the Guinean Premier League but have played four games less than the league leaders CO Coyah who they trail by 11 points. Chiefs will return from Guinea on Sunday evening.
