A late Daniel Cardoso penalty saw Chiefs edge a nervy derby against Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Chiefs had taken a two-goal lead through an own goal from Pirates skipper Ntsikelelo Nyauza and a second from Leonardo Castro before Pirates staged a comeback. The visitors scored in the 39th minute through Vincent Pule and were level on the hour when Gabadinho Mhango levelled the scores at 2-2. Daniel Cardoso held his nerve to score a late penalty for Chiefs to see the Amakhosi through to their sixth successive league win and their first league win against Pirates since December 2014.
Chiefs made the perfect start to the game when a throw in from the right caused havoc in the Pirates back line and as they tried to clear their lines, the ball bobbled up in the air and Nyauza under pressure from Leonardo Castro attacked the ball and attempted to head it back to his goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands. The keeper had come off his line to collect the ball and Nyauza’s header went past Sadilands and trickled over the line to give Chiefs the lead after just 45 seconds.
In the third minute Pirates came close to levelling matters when Fortune Makaringe made good contact with the ball on the edge of the 18- yard area - his effort goal wards sailed past Daniel Akpeyi but it hit the Chiefs right hand up right.
Chiefs were creating some good openings and in the 15th minute Khama Billiat blazed the ball over the bar from close range. Two minutes later a good pass from Samir Nurković from the right in search of Billiat needed a clearance from Abel Mabaso to stop the ball reaching Billiat. From the ensuing corner Nurković’s diving header at goal was blocked by Ben Motshwari.
Nurković was again in the thick of action in the 22nd minute when a sweeping cross from the right by Reeve Frosler found the Serbian striker, who headed the ball downwards towards goal it took a one handed stop from Sandilands to avert the danger as he pushed the ball over the bar to safety.
Chiefs pressure paid off when they doubled their advantage in the 28th minute, as the players waited for George Maluleka to deliver a corner from the right Nurković sold the Pirates defence a dummy running to the near post taking a defender with him. Which left Castro free and as the ball came over, he was able to attack it virtually unmarked and headed it home to make the score 2-0. As Castro scored his fourth goal in a Derby game against Pirates in all competitions, scoring against them for the second weekend in a row.
Pirates pulled a goal back in the 39th minute when they were awarded a free kick on the right edge of the Chiefs 18-yard area. in rather fortuitous circumstances, Vincent Pule made the most of Pirates good fortune curling the ball home from a tight angle as it crept in between the post and Akpeyi. In the immediate aftermath of the goal there was confusion with the assistant referee indicating that it was meant to be an indirect free kick but referee Victor Hlungwani had earlier let it be known that it was a direct free kick.
Chiefs lead 2-1 at the break.
Seven minutes after the restart Gabadinho Mhango raced down the right and cut into the Chiefs 18-yard area before lifting the ball up towards Lorch, who met the ball powerfully with his head, but it hit Akpeyi’s left hand up right.
In the 58th minute there was another scare for Chiefs when a long ball from Thembinkosi Lorch was well controlled by Pule with his chest before hitting the ball on the volley it sailed over Akpeyi and hit the cross bar.
Pirates got themselves level in the 60th minute when Mhango picked up the ball on the left of the Chiefs 18-yard area, before going curling the ball to the far post where he got the ball to go around Akpeyi and into the back of the net.
Chiefs had a chance in the 68th minute to retake the lead from a free kick just on the border of the Pirates 18 -yard area. Billiat took the set piece and got it beyond the wall but Sandilands dived to his left to block the ball. Mathoho chases the rebound and shot goal wards but against Sandilands was on hand to make a crucial stop.
Amakhosi regained the lead in the 84th minute. This was after Bernard Parker was hacked down by Paseka Mako after he had initially been played into space by a neat back heel from Nurković before being upended. Daniel Cardoso stepped up to take the spot kick sending Sandilands the wrong way and Chiefs on their way to victory.
In the final minutes of the game Chiefs were reduced to ten men when Mulomowandau Mathoho was sent off after a number of players were involved in a scuffle, while Mathoho and Mabaso were involved in a pushing match the Pirates man should also have been sent off.
Chiefs negotiated through seven minutes of referee’s optional time, with Akpeyi denying Mabaso late on with a goal line save. Chiefs won their sixth league game in a row and defeated Pirates in a league match for the first time since December 2014.

With Chiefs having given up a two-goal advantage, Amakhosi did not buckle under pressure but instead continued taking the fight to Pirates and got the reward they needed when Bernard Parker was brought down for a penalty in the 84th minute. Daniel Cardoso showed his class as he converted the ensuing spot kick to give Chiefs the win.
