Kaizer Chiefs’ U-13 team arrived in Cape Town just after midday on Thursday and put the finishing touches to their preparations for the Lucky Star Cup. They had their final training session early in the evening in cold and windy conditions which coach Jimmy Jambo believes was a good rehearsal for his team as to the kind of conditions they will encounter over the coming three days.
Jambo spoke of his team’s excitement to be in the Mother City as they prepare to take part in one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in the country. “The boys are very jubilant and excited - they are happy to be here in Cape Town to participate in this tournament. We had a training session which has helped the boys get used to the Cape Town weather - it is colder and windier than they are used to,” he said.
The former Amakhosi defender feels his team will put up a good showing at the Lucky Star Cup. He says he says he confident they will do well from the way we have prepared all week long as the boys have put in a lot of hard work. He believes it is going to be a good tournament for them.
Jambo is also pleased that his charges have gotten the chance to venture away from Gauteng and play further afield he is grateful that they get to be tested under different conditions. “As a coach, it is good to get your team into a different environment to see how they cope. We are out of Gauteng and it is a good challenge for us to see and for the players to test themselves in these conditions. It is also good to play against teams who play differently to what they are used to,” he added.
For the Chiefs U-13 coach, travelling with his team is a learning experience for most of his players and the experience he believes will do them good in years to come. “Some of the boys have never travelled this far before. We are grateful that the club allowed us to come here. These kinds are of trips are inspirational for the boys because they want to have long careers as footballers. Participating in these kinds of tournaments will motivate them to do well and hopefully it will be the first of many tournaments that they will travel to,” he concluded.
The Chiefs U-13s will be participating in the U-14 stream at the Lucky Star Cup. They will kick off their tournament on Friday evening at 20h50 against FC Kapstadt. They will play two more group games on Saturday against Oriental Gunners FC and Chelsea Bridgeton FC with potential knockout games on Sunday should they progress beyond the group stages.
The games take place at the Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory, Cape Town.
