Kaizer Chiefs had a successful trip to Cameroon where they travelled for the CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg game against Cameroonian champions PWD Bamenda on Sunday. Amakhosi won the match at the recently built Limbe Omnisports Stadium in the South-Western region of the country. After missing Amakhosi’s last two league matches due to suspension, defender Mulomowandau Mathoho scored the only goal of the match late in the second half to secure the game for the visitors.

Both teams started slowly in the first half with a few shots from both sides. The slow start could be attributed to the sweltering weather conditions in coastal town of Cameroon.

As the match progressed, PWD Bamenda started asking questions but goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was able to deal with the threats. They also missed some chances.

The teams went into halftime with the scoreboard at 0-0.

Bamenda made two changes at the start of the second half, while Amakhosi were forced to bring on Yagan Sasman for Ramahlwe Mphahlele who was pulled off due to a hamstring injury.

The second half was more lively with both teams attacking but not able to find the back of the net.

With the results not coming, coach Gavin Hunt made a tactical change in the 77th minute by introducing Lebogang Manyama and sacrificing Leonardo Castro.

The move paid dividends as Manyama laid off a sublime pass to Mathoho who was well positioned in the 84th minute and the lanky defender superbly buried the ball, silencing the hundreds of supporters who had forced their way into the stadium. Amakhosi went 0-1 up with 5 minutes to go.

The coach made more changes a minute later Siphelele Ntshangase made way for Willard Katsande as he tried to solidify the defence.

There was drama in the 89th minute as Daniel Cardoso was adjudged to have brought Bamenda’s player down in the 18-yard box and Gabonese referee Mihindou Mbina Gauthier did not hesitate and pointed to the penalty spot, much to the delight of many locals in the stadium.  Cardoso was cautioned for the tackle.

Skipper Itumeleng Khune showed his class and brilliance once again as stopped the ball, much to the relief of Amakhosi’s bench and travelling party.

Five minutes were added at the end of the 90’ and Amakhosi made their final change as experienced campaigner Bernard Parker was pulled off and replaced by Lazalous Kambole.

Amakhosi held on until the referee blew his final whistle with as winner of the first leg of the Champions League Preliminary match.

PWD Bamenda will have to travel south for the return leg of the match that will be played at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday.
