Kaizer Chiefs recorded their third successive win in the DStv Premiership with a convincing 3-0 win over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC at FNB Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. This was Chiefs’ first home win in the league this season. Amakhosi went into the lead in the 19th minute with a moment of magic from Nkosingiphile Ngcobo. The home team then scored two goals in the second half with substitutes Lebogang Manyama and Happy Mashiane getting vital strikes to make sure of the points. Late in the game both teams had a player sent off. Bulelani Ndegngane was first to go in the 83rd minute, while Bernard Parker received his marching orders in the 94th minute.
With no real goal mouth action early on, the first talking point was Chiefs being forced into a change in the 10th minute with skipper Ramahlwe Mphahlele leaving the field through a right hamstring injury. He was eventually substituted in the 15th minute by Njabulo Blom. Daniel Cardoso took over captaincy duties from Mphahlele.
After both teams had been consigned to taking shots from distance, Chiefs struck the first blow in the game with a goal out of nowhere. Kgotso Moleko began the move with a throw-in to Nurković from the right. The Serb got to the ball ahead of ahead of Ayanda Nkili and played it to his left, finding Ngcobo who with a delightful piece of skill managing to bring the ball under control before lifting it over Nicholus Lukhubeni and while it was in the air, he hit the ball on the volley with his left leg as it flew past Washington Arubi into the back of the net to put Chiefs 1-0 ahead in the 19th minute.
In the 36th minute, Ndengane felled Leonardo Castro on the halfway line with a two footed lunge, which took the Chiefs attacker off his feet and left him grimacing in pain on the ground. The TTM player only picked up a yellow card for what can only be deemed as a reckless challenge. A number of Chiefs players were on the end of a number of unorthodox challenges, with Castro, Nurković and Dumsani Zuma particularly feeling the brunt of these.
Chiefs managed to ride out the physicality of the game in the sapping heat of Johannesburg and went into the break 1-0 ahead.
Some good defensive work in the opening minutes of the second half first from Anthony Akumu on Lerato Lamola, which saw the lanky defender track the striker before sliding on the floor to dispossess him in a dangerous position inside the Chiefs 18-yard area in the 56th minute.
Then there was a well-timed tackle by Cardoso on Aluwani Nedzamba in the 57th minute after Amakhosi had been caught out by a quick counterattack saw Chiefs keep their lead intact.
Chiefs lost Ngcobo in the 58th minute as he was stretched off through injury and was replaced by Happy Mashiane. Amakhosi then needed to make another injury enforced change with substitute Lebohang Lesako going off a few minutes later after coming on as he injured himself while stretching for the ball. Mashiane had skipped down the left wing and cut the ball across goal searching for Lesako who came sliding in at full stretch for the ball and was unable to push it beyond Arubi. In the process he injured himself and left the field. this action happening in the 62nd minute.
Lesako was replaced by Manyama whose first touch on the ball saw him double Chiefs lead. The goal came as TTM failed to effectively clear their lines after an initial long clearance by Daniel Akpeyi, which eventually saw a mistimed clearance by Edgar Manaka fall to Mashiane. He again raced down the left wing and crossed the ball over to the opposite wing this time he found Manyama who wasted no time in dispatching the ball past Arubi to make it 2-0 for the home team.
In the 83rd minute Ndengane on his 34th birthday was shown a second yellow card and ultimately a red one for an over-the-top tackle on Nurković. After knocking down Castro in the first half, Ndengane was sent off and the visitors had to finish the game with 10 men.
Chiefs capitalised on their numerical advantage in the final minute of the game. Bernard Parker picked pocketed the ball off Lamola and played it to Manyama, who ran down the middle of the field before playing the ball neatly to his left – where Mashiane came running into drive the ball high and wide of Arubi to put Chiefs 3-0 up.
Amakhosi then saw their numerical advantage dissipate as Parker was shown a red car for a late tackle on Brendon Theron in the fourth minute of added time. He had picked up his first caution just before Chiefs scored their third goal. The red card did not make a difference to the result as Chiefs held on for a 3-0 win.
Chiefs have now won their three league games and will be looking to build on their recent run of form when they face Stellenbosch on Saturday in their next league game. Differing fortunes for the two teams as Chiefs win three games in a row while this was TTM’s third successive league loss.

These were Chiefs final three wins in what was a run that saw Chiefs win eight league games in a row. As they won the preceding five games as well.

This was Chiefs’ first home league win at the home venue since 12th January 2020 when they defeated Cape Town City 3-0. Chiefs had a number of key performers in this game. Daniel Cardoso had to take over the captain’s armband early on and he did a good job; while second half substitutes Happy Mashiane and Lebogang Manyama helped Chiefs turn the game on its head as they both scored and assisted reversing roles. Samir Nurković was the man of the match he made the assist for Chiefs opening goal and has contributed towards three goals in the three league games that he has started, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
