Steve Komphela feels that anything could have happened if Wednesday’s match between Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United would have been 11 against 11. “I thought we did well,” the coach reflected, while adding that “even with one man down, we could still have drawn this match.”
Some people queried the coach’s decision to change a centre-back for a centre-back after Mathoho’s sending off, bringing on Daniel Cardoso for Lorenzo Gordinho.
“It looked maybe a bit strange at the time,” the Amakhosi coach explained afterwards, “but as a coach you need to assess the situation and make certain decisions after a player gets sent off. I felt that we needed to control the midfield and be creative in attack. That’s why there was no way I could have taken off Pule Ekstein, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker or Gustavo Páez.
“Looking back, I took the right decision. It’s always going to be difficult when you get a red-card early on. We then conceded a second goal before half-time. We did well and showed a spirited performance, fighting to the bitter end.”
Kaizer Chiefs will now have a short break before travelling to the Mother City to face Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, 13 September (kick-off is at 19:30) for yet another tough fixture.
