The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children started on Saturday, 25 November, and will last until 10 December 2017.
This year’s campaign will be held under the theme, ‘Count me in: Together moving a non-violent South Africa forward.
Abuse constitutes any behaviour that causes fear, bodily harm and a person doing things against your will. Forms of abuse include child abuse, rape, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual harassment and financial abuse.
It is important to note as well that the 16 Days Campaign should not be viewed as a stand-alone event. It is just one leg of the #356Days of Activism Campaign and #CountMeIn, which aims to mobilise members of society, especially men, to join hands in the fight to curb Violence Against Women.
“Count me in,” George ‘Mido’ Maluleka stresses the importance of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. “There is a lot going on in our country. We must all show that we are against the abuse of women and children, because that’s just not on.”
Abuse can be everywhere. It can happen to your grandmother, your mother, your sister or your daughter. It’s therefore important to step in when this happens, because, as ‘Mido’ points out, “We are all equal as human beings and we need to have respect for each other.”
