Amakhosi finished in fourth position last season, six points behind ultimate winners Mamelodi Sundowns.
Three players of that talented squad were promoted to Chiefs’ first team: goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma and midfielders Wiseman Meyiwa and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.
Others were loaned out, including Mpho Khumalo (Mthatha Bucks), Itumeleng Shopane and Sibongiseni Ngcobo (both to Cape Town All Stars).
“For sure, we are striving to win the MDC,” coach Zwane continues. “Everything should be about winning, even though the ultimate goal is to have players good enough to join the first team.”
Chiefs will play Arrows at Clermont’s Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday (kick-off is at 12:00).
“They play as a team,” Zwane comments about Sunday’s opponents. “They are not a route-one team, which just kicks the ball forward. They are like us, building up from the back.”
Amakhosi have some promising youngsters, including the forward Yusuf Bunting, who was somewhat unfortunate to miss out on most of last season due to injury.
“We have a rather new squad,” Zwane admits, “with most of the players having been promoted from our Under-17s.
“They are all talented and it’s our mission to instil that winning mentality. No team wants to lose against Chiefs. We anticipate a good game to watch.”
