Kaizer Chiefs (0) 1 (Damons 77 o.g.)
Chippa United (0) 0
Kaizer Chiefs recorded their third successive league win over Chippa United with a dominating performance in a 1-0 win in their second DStv Premiership game of the 2020-21 campaign at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday Evening. In the end an own goal from Gregory Damons handed Chiefs the win, after it looked like Chippa goalkeeper Veli Mothwa and the woodwork had done enough to deny Chiefs the victory.
A good run down the right from Khama Billiat in the 21st minute saw him speed away from the Chippa’s defence before he was able to send in a dangerous ball trying to pick out Leonardo Castro lurking inside the Chippa 6-yard area. The ball came over Frederic Nsabiyumva, who managed to stick out a foot and pushed the ball out for a corner.
Four minutes later, Chiefs came closer to breaking the deadlock as Billiat swung in a free kick from the right. Kearyn Baccus managed to flick the ball to the back post, where Daniel Cardoso managed to send it towards goal. He in turn found Castro who managed to meet the ball powerfully with his head. His effort hit the right hand upright and the danger was averted.
In the 29th minute Billiat was again at the heart of a Chiefs attack after playing a series of neat passes with Manyama. He lost control of the ball as it hit a Chippa player and fell in the path of Castro, who ran onto the ball and with Mothwa bearing down on him. He sent the ball over the goal.
In the 31st minute, all Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt could do was shake his head as Chiefs again came within inches of scoring, Manyama was able to send a free kick from some 25 yards from goal over the Chippa wall and past the outstretched hand of Mothwa. The ball crashed thunderously against the cross bar offering another reprieve for the hosts.
Chiefs misfortune continued in the 38th minute when a long ball from Chiefs keeper Daniel Akpeyi saw Castro rise above Nsabiyumva and head the ball towards Billiat, who moved to his left took on a defender beat him and unleashed a powerfully driven shot. Which saw Mothwa sprawl along the ground and get a slight touch to the ball as it hit his left hand upright.
A first half in which Chiefs dominated ended 0-0, with Amakhosi unfortunate not to have been leading at the break.
Chiefs continued pressing for a breakthrough in the opening exchanges of the second half. They missed out on another opportunity to have scored in the 55th minute when Reeve Frosler was able to send in a telling ball from the right towards the back post. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo attacked the ball but was unable to make contact with the ball from close range. Two minutes later Ngcobo was put in on goal by Billiat as he tried to get the ball under control, but he lost his footing and the opportunity passed.
Chiefs continued to lay siege to the Chippa goal and in the 65th minute had another attack thwarted. it was again the work of Akpeyi sending a long ball forward which Castro headed towards Billiat who in turn got Manyama in on goal. His powerful shot was unfortunately blocked by Mothwa.
The Chippa keeper was kept busy a few seconds on as he pushed a shot from distance by Cardoso over the bar. From the resulting corner, Mothwa pushed Siyabonga Ngezana’s header away for another corner. The Chippa keeper again managed to push away a glancing header by Baccus, which fell to the far post where Nsabiyumva almost knocked the ball into his own goal, but the ball looped up and out.
In the 70th minute Mothwa got down to push aside another long-range drive, this time from Ngcobo.
Bernard Parker came on in the 74th minute to replace Castro. The Colombian was unfortunate not to have opened his scoring tally for the season before leaving the field.
Seven minutes on Chiefs pressure finally paid dividends. Manyama managed to send in a cross from the right which Billiat was unable to get to it as he was behind pulled back by Isaac Nhlapho. The ball travelled on and hit Gregory Damons and flew off his knee past Mothwa against the cross bar and over the line to give Chiefs the lead. He was under pressure from Ngcobo who was lurking just behind him.
Chiefs were able to close out the win and bounced back with a sterling performance after their opening day loss to Sundowns. The win is a perfect tonic for Amakhosi as they get ready to face Orlando Pirates on the weekend in the MTN8 semifinal first leg.
Fact of the game:
This was Chiefs 15th league game against Chippa United and it was Amakhosi’s 8th win against them and their third in succession.
Number of the game 3:
Chiefs kept their third successive clean sheet against Chippa United and are now 328 minutes against them without conceding a goal against the Chili boys.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
Ngcobo was the official man of the match. The diminutive midfielder linked up well with Billiat and Manyama. There were also commendable performances for Castro and Billiat who both could have scored had it not been for Mothwa’s acrobatics, while Manyama also showed good leadership and strength with his performance. Also, Chiefs defence held firm not allowing Chippa a single shot on target. While Akpeyi was a general pedestrian in the game, he did send a number of telling balls forward which created havoc for the Chilli Boys.
