ABSA Cup Round Of 32

Kick Off: 15h45

25th February 2007

Temperature: 38 °C

As early as the fifth minute, Arrows made it clear to The Amakhosi that defending the trophy they won a year ago would not be easy, as Vusumuzi Vilakazi had Rowen Fernandez at full stretch with a shot inside Chiefs' 18 yard area which travelled along the ground.

Fernandez was at full stretch to his right to keep out the young strikers attempt at goal. While Arrows were the first of the teams to have found an opening at goal, The Amakhosi followed suit when in the fourteenth minute Gert Schalkwyk dazzled the Arrows defence with a pass that caught the opposition napping and found its way to Kaizer Motaung Jnr. who collected the ball and raced towards the Arrows goal.

The Chiefs' striker's speed meant that he was easily able to round Arrows goalkeeper, Wardle but he had been pushed wide and when he eventually took his chance at goal, his shot hit the side netting.

This game did not produce the sparkle of a cup game, but was played in stops and starts with neither team dominating the play.

In a spell between the 20 – 30 minute mark, Mabuthi Khanyeza came close to giving Arrows the lead, but he shot narrowly over Rowen Fernandez's cross bar after being teed up off an Arrows free kick on the edge of the Chiefs 18 yard area. Khanyeza unleashed a thunderous shot towards Fernandez from the 26th minute free kick, which swerved over the Chiefs wall and he came agonizingly close to giving Arrows the lead.

After a goalless first half, Siyabonga Nkosi had a chance early in the second half to have broken the deadlock after being set up by Kaizer Junior. What looked like a ball heading into the Arrows' goal, was blocked by Arrows defender Khuboni.

Chances in this game were few and far between after Nkosi’s 52nd minute attempt; The Amakhosi’s next shot at goal came thirteen minutes later in the 65th minute.

After some good work by substitute David Mathebula after taking on two Arrows' players, he floated in a ball from the right which Kaizer Motuang Junior was able to chest in the direction of teammate Gert Schalkwyk. He, in turn, thought quickly and wasted no time in hitting a well timed volley goal wards, but for some quick thinking from Wardle he might have given Chiefs the lead as the Arrows goalie rose to push the ball over.

Golden Arrows best attempt at goal in the second half came in the from of a Norman Smith shot in the 71st minute, Arrows match winner when the teams met two weeks ago, Smith was unable to squeeze the ball past Amakhosi stopper Rowen Fernandez who got down to the ball and made a difficult save look easy.

Ninety minutes of football could not separate the teams so into extra time the game went.

Thirty minutes of additional play produced one clear scoring opportunity which fell the way of Arrows. It was Kagiso Dikgacoi who almost won the game for Arrows in the 100th minute, as he picked up the lose ball off an attempted clearance by a Chiefs player. He did well to control the ball with his first touch and with his second knocked the ball goal wards, his shot passed Fernandez but could not beat the goalpost and the ball ricocheted off the post and Chiefs survived.

Into the dreaded penalty shoot out we went Chiefs and Arrows converted their first four kicks, before Rowen Fernandez stepped up to take The Amakhosi’s fifth and final spot kick. The Chiefs keeper shot to his right and watched in horror as Wardle stopped the ball, there drama was not over as the referee ordered the kick to be retaken as Wardle and moved off his line.

Fernandez picked himself up but fluffed the opportunity to redeem himself as he again kicked in the same corner, once again Wardle guessed correctly and stopped the shot. Norman Smith then stepped forward to take Arrows fifth penalty and sent Fernandez the wrong way, and Arrows into the last sixteen.

Olympia Park in Rustenburg has had the indignity of seeing Chiefs surrender two Cup Competitions in consecutive seasons of which they were the defending Champions, as it was at this very venue in 2005 – 2006 that Chiefs the defending Coca Cola Cup Champions from the previous season were bundled out by Jomo Cosmos in Rustenburg.

As they surrendered their ABSA Cup crown without a real fight Ernst Middendorp sped off the pitch after the game to a back drop of celebrating Golden Arrows players and a picture perfect sunset in the Platinum City.
