Human Rights Day is celebrated on Wednesday, 21 March, in remembrance of the Sharpeville massacre which took place on this day in 1960.
“It is concerning to learn about abuses happening in our society today,” says Motaung without prejudice. “We read in the media about some incidents that are absolutely inhuman. We learnt about a child having drowned in a pit toilet recently and how a female train driver was stripped naked by angry commuters. These are examples that prove we have a long way to go before we reach living a life of respect for human rights.”
In conveying his message to commemorate that fateful day on 21 March 1960 when 69 fatalities were reported after the police opened fire on protesters in Sharpeville, Motaung pays his tribute to the fallen heroes.
“We will always be reminded of the fallen heroes of that fateful day in our dark history. They gave their lives for our liberation. Let the commemoration of this day renew the spirit of Ubuntu in and amongst our communities.”
Respect and Love & Peace are the values that run through the veins of Kaizer Chiefs.
“As Kaizer Chiefs, we will continue to promote human rights values as per our slogan of Love & Peace,” concludes Motaung. “We will endeavour at all times to promote the important concepts of dignity, liberty, equality and brotherhood as per Article 1-2 of the Declaration of Human Rights as well as the Bill of Rights, Chapter 2, of the South African Constitution.”
Wishing you all a memorable Human Rights Day!
