“Guys, it’s so good to see you all,” Simon ‘Bull’ Lehoko enthusiastically tells his former teammates who came to visit him at his house in Sharpeville, Vuka extension.
The former Kaizer Chiefs defender had his left foot amputated in December 2016. It came as a result of a brick falling on Lehoko’s foot. The resulting wound struggled to heal and eventually a doctor was consulted. It was only then that it was realised that ‘Bull’ had become diabetic. By then it had become too late and an operation was needed.
Lehoko wore the Gold and Black jersey between 1978 and 1985. Former Amakhosi teammates had already visited him earlier after the operation, when he was still in hospital, but on Monday afternoon they came to his house.
Seven former teammates visited ‘Bull’, who is getting around his house in a wheelchair – Big Boy Kholoane, Buick Makwati, Jackie Masike, Ryder Mofokeng, Senzeni Ntsibande, Lucky Stylianou and JC Xaba. They were accompanied by Chiefs’ Supporters Relations Manager, Cecil Motaung.
Former captain Mofokeng handed to Lehoko a bag full of Chiefs clothes, including a jersey with his name on it and his famous jersey number, ‘14’.
“This is wonderful,” reacted ‘Bull’, who looked in good spirits, “thank you so much.”
Representatives from the Amakhosi’s supporters club, Sedibeng Region, also visited the former Chiefs stalwart on the day.
Lehoko’s leg is recovering well. His next visit to the doctor will me in mid-April after which, hopefully, measurements can be taken for a prosthetic leg, which will help him being able to walk again.
Meanwhile, the former Chiefs players reminisced during the visit about the playing days, winning cups, league trophies and, of course, also about last weekend’s Soweto Derby, which ended in a stalemate.
After a prayer, led by Mofokeng, Lehoko’s former teammates left back to Johannesburg. “We will come back soon to check-up up on you again,” promised Masike.
